The Great Untangling of 2016 was an event that was roughly a week long in October of 2016. It an unofficial initiation (or baptism of fire) for the new members of the Tech Team for the academic year 2016-2017.
After many members had graduated the year before, the only member of YSTV's technical team was Sam Willcocks. Many members joined in 2016 which resulted in lots of new tech team members at the beginning of the year.
This event allowed 3 potential tech minions to help the lonely technical directorSam Willcocks who was understaffed and busy despite having an elected dep tech whose position was highly contested at the earlier by-elections.
It seems as though only Sam Willcocks, Tom Lee, Hui-Ling Phillips and Haruna Higa attended. Notably missing was the member who was actually elected as Deputy Technical Director in by-elections at the beginning of the year.
The Tasks
The event consisted of many tasks including:
- Untangling cables
- Investigating whether cables could / should still be used
- Deciphering type of cable and sorting into boxes
- Labelling Boxes and organising them in the tech room
- Some general tech pointers
Breaks from staring at cables included Sam showing the new tech minions other bits of tech around the studio and control room and explaining how to use it while he shared stories of YSTV myth and legend
The Results
- Black fingers from untangling old cables
- Shoe soles covered in stray electrical tape
- An arguably more organised tech room (for a while)
- A future tech team with no misconceptions about the long, late hours they could be spending in YSTV in the future
