David Roberts was Station Director from June 1989 until he resigned in 1990, leaving the University to become a singer/songwriter.

According to a YSTV/NaSTA newsletter from 1990, David's first act as Station Director was to buy an edit suite that YSTV had been saving for, which made editing easier and programmes slicker. He also produced the daily magazine programme 002, which was broadcast every day throughout the summer term (a feat believed to have unmatched since!) He negotiated a "modest budget" for YSTV at a time when the Student Union was hostile to the station.

Steven.perring: Creation of Page based on 1990 publicity in archive.

YSTV hosted the NaSTA conference in 1990. It ran from 4th - 6th April 1990, and included a trip to Bradford's Photographic Film and Television Museum (now the National Media Museum).

There were a grand total of four categories proposed for the awards - Live Programmes, News & Current Affairs, Drama, and Freestyle. Each station paid £15 to enter the awards which gave them the right to enter each category once. If they wanted to enter it more than once they had to pay an extra £10 per entry. The winners were decided by a weighted vote with each station receiving a vote, and a category judge having a weighted vote.

The conference hit the rocks early in 1990 when the YSTV Station Director David Robert resigned and left the university to become a singer/songwriter.

Copyrighted Music Controversy
Back in the late 1980s/early 1990s the host station had to organise paying a licence fee for copyrighted music to The Performing Right Society Limited (PRS) and the Mechanical-Copyright Protection Society Limited (MCPS). Back in 1987, after the they realised student television was using copyrighted music illegally, YSTV had arranged a deal with them which meant that NaSTA stations could use copyrighted music if they paid £30. Unfortunately the 1989 NaSTA hosts, GTV, did not pay the copyright fees/collect the money leading to YSTV publishing a somewhat passive aggressive article about copyright in a 1990 Conference newsletter. It was in 1990 that YSTV once again negotiated with the PRS and MCPS and got the fee down to £18 per station (or unit as they were known then!)

Steven joined at the 2009 Fresher's Fair after dreaming of the day when he could join YSTV. Whilst that's a blatant lie his choice to come to York Uni was greatly swayed by the presence of YSTV. Steven started out in YSTV as a reporter on 'Round Up' where he got a chance to wind up much of the higher level university staff by asking them difficult questions. The James College provost still won't talk to him after he implied that James College N Block was the worst student accommodation for miles around.

In his first year he was also Nouse/YSTV's Video Editor after being forced into it by Anna Bucks and started producing YSTV's Fresher's Guide for 2010.

Steven was elected Station Director on the 17th of May 2010 and once elected he worked hard to make YSTV more visible on campus as well as annoy the other media society heads. "It's just too easy!". He essentially gave up a week of his life to make all the videos for the first ever YUSU Awards in June 2010 and in return YSTV had a network of some sorts as all of YUSU's screens were showing YSTV. This was repeated for Woodstock 2010.

Steven produced YSTV's Fresher's Guide to York, which damn near killed him. With a 19 week production he claims that it's the longest production that YSTV has ever undertaken, well, second to Man Man thanks to Simon Harris' glacial editing speed. The production involved working with the university on a level unparalleled in YSTV memory and, if Steven's warnings are heeded, never will again. He managed to convince the university to let him show 'typical' rooms and spent the whole of the summer term 2010 devoting a bit too much time into getting into as many rooms as possible, often with a camera! YSTV's Fresher's Guide to York went live online Thursday 12th August 2010 and after a hail of complaints from Langwith and Derwent colleges, a newer improved version was launched on 16th August with the tagline "now with 100% more Langwith and Derwent!" The video was placed onto the university accommodation website and most of the college JCRCs wanted their part on their sites.

As Station Director Steven worked with Commerical Services at the University to get YSTV onto the screens on campus, to build on the success of Woodstock 2011. He also formed close links with the new TFTV department, and through them got YSTV involved with local TV, although this was subsequently abandoned under later Station Directors. He worked alongside the Charities Commission to safeguard Children In Need against ultra-virus laws, and helped relaunch the show in 2010 live from PX/001. He opened up links with the local community, pioneering the Freshers Roadshow and Fresher's Prize Draw the first of which happened in 2010, with the top prize being a hamper from Bettys that he had somehow managed to blag, along with 5 years worth of Yorkshire Tea that kept appearing in the studio! He also organised and produced the central film for the Children In Need show, 'The Yorkshire Pass Challenge, by working alongside Visit York. He won the Greg Dyke Award for Contribution to Student Media at the 2011 YUSU Awards.

Whilst Station Director Steven worked with Alex Balmer to encourage as many new shows to be developed as possible. It was under his time as Station Director that The York Link, TUC, Spotlight, The Sound Lab, and Student Kitchen all premiered. The York Sport Show was also re-launched by Sarah Pickles. In 2011, YSTV won highly commended Best Broadcaster at the 2011 NaSTA Awards, as well as best Technical Achievement. He continued his winning partnership with Michael Miller in 2012, co-ordinating and editing the Best Broadcaster winning NaSTA showreel with Sarah Pickles and Chris Wall.

Having been a history student, Steven has a real passion for the past and this was reflected with his work with the YSTV Archive. He led the digitisation project of the VHS archive, and worked with the Yorkshire Film Archive to get the remainder of the archive available to view. He created and helped to curate the YSTV Collection at the Yorkshire Film Archive, established in October 2012. He was also in the process of establishing at YSTV collection at the Borthwick Institute for Archives, to house our paper collection, as he left the University.

Being a history student, Steven has a real passion for the past and this is reflected with his work with the YSTV Archive. He led the digitisation project of the VHS archive and is working with the Yorkshire Film Archive to get the remainder of the archive available to view. He is also in the process of establishing at YSTV collection at the Borthwick Institute for Archives, to house our paper collection.

YSTV took along 17 members, including Mark Friend for the 6th time.

YSTV won Best Broadcaster for the first time since 1998, as well as Best Onscreen Female Emma Bennett and highly commended for Best Light Entertainment for Chris Wall's Pushing the Senses.
Highlights included...
* A tree catching fire whilst filming the golden bodge. Steven Perring was visably disappointed when he was pulled away from the scene.
* A number of YSTV members requiring alcohol related medical assistance at the end of the ceremony after a particularly testing first half. YSTV won the NaSTIE for most amount of ambulances and medical attention needed in NaSTA history.
* Marie Mills got very friendly with a member of NUTS.
* Steven Perring ran for the NaSTA Exec but was unsuccessful.
* Our Golden Bodge involved singing 'I'm Sexy and I Know It' by LMFAO in the style of Come Dine With Me. Needless to say there was nudity, including Mark Friend.

Checkmate was the romantic drama written by Sanat Misra and Steven Perring that was an unlikely hit during the 2011-12 academic year. It was described as a "cult classic"and was even included within our marketing entry for NaSTA 2012.

Production
Checkmate was based on an incomplete short story written by Sanat Misra. During the first day of the 2011 YSTV Summer Camp Sanat decided that it would be a good idea to film the story for YSTV. He roped Steven on board as he was busy filming the Man Man spin-off Multiple-Personality Man with [[Michael Miller]. The script was written by Steven in one afternoon and after much argument about how gay the script was, and whether it should end with a kiss or not, the script was finalised.

Filming happened during the second week of the Summer Camp, with the main cafe scenes being filmed one the river balcony of the City Screen cinema after Sarah Pickles and Steven Perring talked them around to letting us film there. The filming schedule was tight, with much of the filming happening between 8am and 10am when the cinema opened. Other filming locations in the city of York included Coney Street, the Starbucks on Coney Street, the New Walk, and the York Designer Outlet (posing for a US mall). Montage scenes were also filmed at Bishopthorpe Palace, and in a cornfield near the A64.

Due to the complexity of the shoot, and the fact that the Steve as director did not have much experience of directing anything other than live and factual programmes, all the shots were planned in advance and Sarah Pickles wrote a tape log. The main cast was decided based on who was available with Michael Miller and Sanat Misra taking the two lead roles with Vivien Chung being reluctantly roped in as the narrator's girlfriend, Elisabeth. Marie Mills even had a cameo as a waitress.

Once the filming was over Steve and Sanat split the editing, with Sanat taking the montage scenes and Steve the rest. Meanwhile Marie Mills composed original music. In the end much of the editing was left to Steve and it took weeks of hounding of Marie to write the music. Checkmate was originally set for release during freshers week 2012, but it was delayed until the new year because of the lack of the music.

Reaction
The reaction was totally unexpected. Within a week it had been watched thousands of times and it soon took over from YSTV's Fresher's Guide to York as the most watched thing ever on the YSTV website. Due, largely to the efforts of Vivan Jayant, it soon became an internet hit with its own Facebook fan page and reddit following. It also made stars of cast, including Sanat getting "exciting" offers from many girls, and being bitten in the Willow, and Viv becoming known as "Vivien Chung of Checkmate Fame".

The triple storyline confused many of those who watched it, and led to some very imaginative reasons why coffee cups kept appearing and reappearing in the shot. Similarly, the unusually long lift scene led to many suggesting that Vanbrugh College had a Empire State-sized tower block just out of view!

Checkmate became so famous that the 2012 YUSU Elections were themed around Checkmate with both Sanat Misra and Michael Miller presenting. Meanwhile at NaSTA 2012, many members of NUTS got thoroughly over-excited at meeting everyone!

Checkmate also sparked much imitation with a member of Filmmaking Soc creating a theatrical trailer, and The Lemon Press suggested a follow up with the title 'King Me'. There was also a particularly cutting "Directors Commentary" with "Steve" and "Matt Johnson". Whilst interviewing the cast of Avenue Q a special shout-out/promo to 'Checkmate' was filmed and is available here.

He is also Nouse/YSTV's Video Editor and is producing YSTV's Fresher's Guide for 2010.

Steven was elected Station Director on the 17th of May 2010 and since elected has worked hard to make YSTV more visible on campus as well as annoy the other media society heads.

He also formed close links with the new TFTV department, and through them get YSTV involved with local TV. He worked alongside the Charities Commission to safeguard Children In Need against ultra-virus laws, and helped relaunch the show in 2010 live from PX/001. He opened up links with the local community, pioneering the Fresher's Prize Draw the first of which happened in 2010, with the top prize being a hamper from Bettys that he had somehow managed to blag, along with 5 years worth of Yorkshire Tea that kept appearing in the studio! He also organised and produced the central film for the Children In Need show, 'The Yorkshire Pass Challenge, by working alongside Visit York. He won the Greg Dyke Award for Contribution to Student Media at the 2012 YUSU Awards.

In the early 90's it was a tradition to award Honorary Membership to graduates who had given many good years to the service of YSTV (usually to the detriment of their degree).

This was in part a nice way of saying thanks to those that had kept the place going. It was also a way of encouraging Old Farts to return for major events, when an extra pair of hands was appreciated, and hope that with the new found wealth of a real job they would buy a round of drinks for their still student chums.

Making of Bulletin was a one-off documentary made for BBC Choice Scotland and broadcast as part of their student TV night in January 2000.

At the 1999 NaSTA conference in Glasgow, one of the speakers was Ewan Angus, a commissioning editor from BBC Scotland. Through GUST (Glasgow Uni Student TV), he commissioned each of the stations to produce a short programme. Each had to submit several programme ideas and one was to be picked and funded.

Three different ideas were asked for, a new episode of Games Disaster was favoured by YSTV, but the suggestion to make a behind-the-scenes documentary about YSTV's regular news programme Bulletin was the one chosen. Other programs came from GUST, GTV, BTV and STOIC.

The BBC paid for YSTV to hire a DV camera, microphones and a DV deck to export to for the project which was edited on the station's own Mac. The total cost was £650.

The resulting 8-minute-or-so documentary may not have acurately reflected a normal edition of Bulletin, but it wasn't bad for a team that had never made a documentary nor edited anything of that length before.

Most members of the station contributed to the project which was produced and edited by Chris Ward, Paul Soulsby and Peter Bowles.

The voice-over was provided by Thea Darricotte. The finished product can be seen on the YSTV website
In a maximum of ten minutes of video, each station has to sell it's claim to be the best student television station in the country. This is normally done by cutting together excerpts from every production made in the previous year, with a mixture of live sound and music used to glue the whole lot together.
The edits produced have subsequently been used to promote the station at many other events, although the use of copyrighted music has prevented their being released on the website or broadcast regularly.

Steven.perring:

Steven joined at the 2009 Fresher's Fair after dreaming of the day when he could join YSTV. Whilst that's a blatant lie his choice to come to York Uni was greatly swayed by the presence of YSTV. Steven started out in YSTV as a reporter on 'Round Up' where he got a chance to wind up much of the higher level university staff by asking them difficult questions. The James College provost still won't talk to him after he implied that James College N Block was the worst student accommodation for miles around.

He is also Nouse/YSTV's Video Editor and is producing YSTV's Fresher's Guide for 2010.

Steven was elected Station Director on the 17th of May 2010 and since elected has worked hard to make YSTV more visible on campus as well as annoy the other media society heads.

Steven.perring: Update

YSTV's Fresher's Guide to York was the brainchild of Steven Perring who, in Easter 2010 decided that it would be great if YSTV could produce a guide to York, showing typical rooms and telling the freshers what it's really like at the University of York.

Unfortunately Steven did not realise that the university were not all that happy about showing what the university was really like and he had to convince several people in the university that it was a good idea. He pushed on, and after a mammoth 17 week production schedule, and Premiere Pro breaking several times, the guide was completed and put online the manual way, and the website encoders just happened to be down.

After several complaints from Langwith and Derwent Colleges that their part of the guide wasn't exactly the same as all the other colleges, despite their lack of support in the project. New interviews were conducted with the Derwent JCRC and Sam Asfahani, the then YUSU York Sport Sabb, and a Langwith Alumni. This newer video was launched on the site with the tagline "now with 100% more Langwith and Derwent" - this video quickly became the forth most watched video of all time on the YSTV website.

On 24th August the Colleges part of the guide was officially the most watched video on the YSTV website.

The Guide also included a guide to the City of York presented by Alexander Prowse and a guide to fresher's week and how to make the most out of being a fresher presented by Michael Miller.

Steven currently presents Fast Food and co-produces it with Michael Chislett. He is also Nouse/YSTV's Video Editor and is producing YSTV's Fresher's Guide for 2010. Regardless of what Michael Chislett may claim he was also a leading party in the creation of Windowvision suggesting that the image should be reversed so that it was a TV screen from outside rather than essentially a cinema for YSTV.

Steven was elected Station Director on the 17th of May 2010 and since elected has worked hard to make YSTV more visible on campus as well as annoy the other media society heads. "It's just too easy!". He essentially gave up a week of his life to make all the videos for the first ever YUSU Awards in June 2010 and in return YSTV had a network of some sorts as all of YUSU's screens were showing YSTV. This was repeated for Woodstock 2010.
