Robert joined YSTV in his second year, at Freshers Fair 2012, after being prodded into it by Liz Pascoe. He quickly followed this up by running for Deputy Technical Director a couple of weeks later - again, after being prodded into it by Liz. He seemed to make quite an impact within this role, receiving The 'I Don't Know What the Fuck You Do, But It's Fucking Awesome' Award at the 2013 FLOPPYs and being elected Technical Director on the promise to add a crossbow to the technical enforcing armoury.

Robert's year as Technical Director didn't start off quite as well as his previous year went, as he managed to trip the permanent electric supply to the studio, help discover and report a chemical spill, and admitted to YUSU that nobody knew how strong the lighting rig actually was - all in the week leading up to freshers. Since then, Robert has learnt the value of plug-mounted RCD's, and YUSU worked with us on getting a more acceptable COSHH solution in place. The lighting rig was a whole different type of fun. He must have done something to make up for all this during the rest of the year, as he was re-elected to Technical Director in 2014 on the basis that he hadn't broken everything in the station yet.

Robert used to spend his spare time studying Physics - and was occasionally refused access to the station when his degree had deadlines approaching. However, by his third year he actually ended up doing more degree work in the station than out of it. This was unfortunately of little use, as he ended up failing to progress (by way of failing several exams) to his fourth and final year. This meant that he was unable to complete his elected year as Technical Director, and stood down on 9th September 2014. Although the University kindly agreed to award him a Bachelor's degree for his hard work up until that point <strike>at YSTV</strike> towards his degree.

After graduating, Robert spend a short time working for the University's Audio Visual department, before joining Mike Chislett at the IMG Studios engineering department for a time before joining <strike>"Red Bee Media"</strike> <strike>"Ericsson Broadcast and Media Services"</strike> "Red Bee Media (a part of Ericsson)". ==60 Second Manifestos==
With no sign of anyone coming forward to produce Elections, Peter Eskdale stepped in to take on production of the 60 Second Manifestos. Because of how successfully run last year's filming weekend was, the same model was adopted again with minor improvements.

The green screen was set up in the studio, lit by an array of new light fixtures hanging on the still rather new lighting grid, along with a video village area in the corner of the room on lighting desk. The plasma screen was set up behind the camera to show candidates the time remaining, and a pair of condenser mics on a stand was positioned in front of the candidates to capture audio.

Learning from last year's space management problems, G/020 was booked to serve as the editing room for the whole weekend. This year was the first time since YSTV re-adopted chroma-keyed manifestos that Lloyd Wallis and Tom Cheyney's desktops were not used. Instead, the Edit PCs and Peter's laptop were initially set up to edit the manifestos.

Candidate briefing took place on the Monday of Week 4, with paper bookings scrapped in favour of using http://youcanbook.me to schedule filming slots (both systems were used last year, with the production team manually entering bookings at a later time). As before, slots were 15 minutes long and available all over the weekend, as well as limited slots on Friday afternoon. It was made clear to candidates that no further time slots would be made available, unless there were extenuating circumstances. The candidates were also shown the on-demand hit graphs for last year's manifestos, in an attempt to highlight how important filming one was to their campaigns. A series of emails throughout the week (from both YSTV and YUSU) were sent to remind candidates to book their slot.

Thanks to rebranding of Elections by YUSU, manifestos no longer featured a background coloured to match the position the candidate was running for. Better green screen lighting and a simpler Premiere workflow led to manifestos being edited in about three minutes. It was discovered early on that the audio levels on many of the candidates needed some manual fine-tuning. In an attempt to remain consistent in levelling, this job was given solely to Grace Winpenny, leading to a bottleneck in workflow before a video could be encoded.

A dedicated server had initially been set up in the control room to export the completed videos. However, it was discovered early on that the chroma-keying process used was capped at two CPU threads, leading to export times in excess of 30 minutes for a 1 minute video. Due to inadequate hardware, Edit 1 was too slow to edit the chroma-keyed videos. However, it was found to be much faster at exporting the videos (about ten minutes), so was reassigned to that task for the rest of Saturday afternoon. Sam Willcocks later brought in his desktop, and that was also used to export the queue of videos.

Late Saturday afternoon, it was discovered that many of the exported videos had sound issues - some were missing background audio, some had doubled voices. The problem was narrowed down to video exported by Edit 1, so it was decided that all the faulty videos would be re-exported on Sam's desktop, with Edit 1 used for checking and uploading the final copies.

Full Time Officers were given additional tasks to do during and after their slot compared to previous year. YSTV was asked by URY to film the candidates doing turns to camera in front of the green screen, so thaty could be used in a montage introducing the candidates for FTO position on results night. URY also set themselves up in YourSpace with a borrowed Kenobi and the remaining two AC-90 cameras, and collected FTO candidates after their slots to have a light-hearted interview - which would be played out on results night as filler material for the stage show.

Most candidates turned up for their slots, with some cancelling their bookings for unknown reasons. Surprisingly some of the candidates who didn't book at all, or cancelled without rebooking, were running fro FTO positions. This would cause later issues for the candidate montages and interviews for the results night stage show.

Overall, the weekend was fairly relaxed, with a lot of downtime for the production team. Whilst on Saturday some crew members did not leave until midnight (when the last of the days videos had been uploaded), Sunday morning and early-afternoon were mostly free - with the production team going to Courtyard for lunch. There was a flurry of candidates between 2pm and 5pm on the Sunday, with exporting on hold until Grace could come in to level the audio.

After graduating, Robert spend a short time working for the University's Audio Visual department, before joining Mike Chislett at the IMG Studios engineering department.

Greg Dyke is a friend of YSTV. Although it isn't thought he was a member during his time at the university during the early 1970s (his work with Nouse appears to be his only involvement with campus media) he has supported YSTV on a number of occasions, most notably when he and Tom Gutteridge (a former member turned TV executive, then in charge of Mentorn Television) urged the university to allocate new studio space to the society in 1993/4. He, along with Gutteridge and the late Richard Whitely, were guests at the opening of the current studio in October 1994.

Dyke became Chancellor of the University of York ten years later in December 2004. He granted YSTV Week a short interview on the day of his installation and answered questions on his role and his memories of York.

After being reminded of the ten year anniversary during this interview he agreed to visit YSTV in May 2005, when he was interviewed in the studio by Kat Sutton for a special edition of YSTV Week, where he re-watched footage of the reopening and answered questions from current students. During this visit he was awarded an honorary membership of the station.

During this visit Greg agreed in principle to appearing at 2006, which was held in Leeds and co-hosted by YSTV and LS:TV. On the morning of 1st April 2006 he was interviewed by Jonathan Bufton about his memories of student media, his career in television and also answered questions from students from many different stations. There was also a minor exclusive given to NaSTA in the form of his first public comment on his failed takeover bid for ITV, which had stalled days earlier.

Greg recorded a 40th anniversary video greeting, as he was unable to visit the Birthday Party due to prior commitments. Partly as a result of the relationship established via Small Screen two years earlier, London student TV station stoic kindly agreed to record his message in their studio and send it up to York, where it was played on the night during the other speeches and presentations.

In 2015, during Greg's final year as Chancellor of the University, he gave YSTV a parting gift in the form of a substantial monetary donation. This money was put to use getting us another set of HD vision equipment and a new (digital) sound desk.

On the 06/12/2013, the old ceiling supported lighting rig was declared unsafe and was condemned. This left YSTV without a lighting rig until April 2015, when the Pete Bowles Lighting Rig was purchased and installed.

Old rig
The old rig, which had been in place since the middle of the 90's, was essentially scaffold bars clamped onto bolts that ran into the ceiling. Given the size of the bolts and general sturdiness of the entire thing, it was considered (by many generations of YSTV) to be perfectly structurally sound. This was reinforced by the apparent lack of it falling down when lighting, set, and possibly the occasional technician hung from it.

Condemning
During the week before freshers week 2013, Robert Walker had the idea of hanging one of the large CRT's still in the studio from the rig - thus removing it from the floor and freeing up some space. It was then discovered that YSTV was not aware of any documentation stating any load limits for the rig. This was mentioned to YUSU, (who also had no documentation concerning the rig), who then organised for an engineer from TSS to come in and assess the rig. This initial assessment happened during October, and the report back was that the rig looked perfectly safe for the loads we were hanging. However, the engineer had been unable to fully assess the rig, as asbestos in the ceiling prevented him from inspecting how the bolts were attached to the building. In early December the engineer returned, along with a member of the University asbestos team, and inspected the remainder of the rig. It was discovered that some of the bolts were not actually attached to the building, but to pieces of wood that were held onto the building by ordinary wood screws. To make it even worse, the bolts that were attached directly to the building were done in a less than ideal way. Immediately after this inspection, all fixtures were removed from the rig, and it was condemned.

Replacement
Following the condemning of the rig, various solutions to the lack of a rig were proposed. Unfortunately all had the side effect of being rather expensive, so the discussions quickly turned to who's going to be responsible for funding. After a year, the decision was made to run a YuStart campaign. It was also decided to forget about any chance of having a rig build into the building, as the costs were far too great, and instead go for floor-supported truss. Truss had the added benefit of being able to move with the rest of the equipment if YSTV is ever moved from G/046.

YuStart campaign
Ran by Helen Hobin, the campaign was a great success - raising £6285 (plus gift aid). Helen had also asked Greg Dyke if he would be willing to support the campaign, but it wasn't until after the campaign had ended that Greg agreed to fund the entire cost of the rig. After explaining that the campaign had already raised enough, and there was only so much lighting worth buying, Greg agreed to give a donation of £5000 to YSTV as a parting gift - this being the last year he was Chancellor for.

Hello Goodbye
Produced by Helen Hobin, 'Hello Goodbye' was the commemorative show for the new rig. It was held on Friday 19th June, despite the rig having been in place for the entirety of the third term and used for Roses 2015. The title was inspired after Helen was shown the Beatles song of the same name - this being the show where we said 'goodbye' to the old rig and many leaving members of YSTV, and 'hello' to the new rig and (hopefully) new members at the following freshers. As part of the YuStart rewards, Lloyd Wallis and Michael Prior-Jones were guests on the show, and the name and plaque were revealed. And thus the Pete Bowles Lighting Rig was welcomed into YSTV.

Elections 2015 built on some of the successes of 2014 and also took advantage of YUSU effectively doing a load of our marketing for us to be one of the most successful live YSTV productions in recent history in terms of viewer numbers. It comprised the 60 Second Manifestos, Full Time Officer Debates and the Elections Results Night itself,

60 Second Manifestos
Manifestos were set up the weekend before filming, making use of the slightly larger greenscreen frame borrowed from the Electronics department along with some creative lighting to get a fairly even key (roughly, light the greenscreen first to be completely flat, then light the subject as far in front of it as you can). Initially keying live was attempted, but due to the difficulty in consistently getting a clean key across a variety of clothing patterns and skin tones this was scrapped in favour of doing it in After Effects.

For filming the studio was left in this set up all week as no other productions had booked it and it took us the better part of a weekend to set it up. The lighting desk was configured as a sort of "video village", with the laptop feeding a clock graphic to the plasma which was situated immediately behind the camera, along with being used to copy successful takes to Pending Edits and update the spreadsheet. A TV was also set up and connected to the AC90's HDMI output with the OSD output turned on, to monitor the video and audio levels (and also spot the one time when the camera crashed).

Candidate briefing took place in the middle of the week before filming, during which a sheet of paper was handed around for slot bookings for manifestos, and candidates were briefed on what they could expect from 60SM, FTOs, ERN and URY's Candidate Interview Night. An online system was also setup, making use of http://youcanbook.me to sync slot bookings to a Google calendar and allow candidates to edit their slots if they needed to. Slots were 15 minutes long and available all over the weekend, with a limited additional number on the Thursday and Friday for those who were away - candidates who couldn't make any of these times were encouraged to email the producers to find an alternative. Unfortunately several didn't bother, even with URY sending an email summarising the briefing to every candidate a few days later, and a few candidates complained on the following Tuesday morning after the studio was cleared up on Monday and the videos put online - unsurprisingly their failure to read their emails or get in touch meant they didn't get one! Sending the email out to all candidates the evening after the briefing instead of the Friday may have helped with this.

Following filming of each manifesto it was copied to Pending Edits and one of the editors (set up with the two edit PCs and Tom and Lloyd's desktops in G/020) would pick it up and follow through the neat workflow Peter devised, which involved replacing a template video in After Effects, tweaking the keyer settings if it didn't quite work and then flipping across to Premiere to adjust opening titlecard, background colours and names before exporting. All in all manifestos were completed and ready for upload in about half an hour after they were started. One of the main reasons all the videos got finished in time without anybody needing to pull an all-nighter was having so many people around to help, with four editors along with the two producers and a few other crew filming candidates, finishing videos, reviewing and putting online the backlog was relatively short, although a few Adobe bugs meant some of the manifestos were re-exported five or six times!

Manifestos were put live on Monday evening after Station Meeting as the last of the candidates (who had been away over the weekend and contacted us) had filmed hers and the edit had been turned around. Thanks to YSTV breaking the candidate list (abridged by those who didn't bother filming a manifesto) and YUSU embedding the videos, at time of writing there have been 112778 views of the 42 manifestos for 2015, with the view count crossing the 100k mark by the time voting had closed!

FTO Debates
Coming soon (when my degree finishes!)

Results Night
During election Night Matt Ingram was the Content Producer and Sam Nicholson is the Tech Producer, which had allow each of them to focus on their area. This resulted in improvements in both areas.

From a content perspective, the set-up was simple: we had a short introductory section before we cut back to our presenter chatting to two pundits for some general commentary and analysis. When the results were ready to be announced, we'd cut to front of house and as the winner of each position began their speech, we would go back to studio for some instant reaction and results analysis from our pundits. As the winning candidate came to the end of their speech, we cut to VT (the winning candidate's 60 Second Manifesto) so we could sit the winner down, mic them and brief them really quickly on our interview before we came back to studio to chat to them. The cycle was repeated throughout the night and seemed to work.

Towards the beginning of the night, however, due to candidates not showing up to the announcements, the timing of the event was altered and URY filled any gaps for their show or for the event with music. We can't do that, and this eventually resulted in our presenter and pundits having 20 minutes of airtime to fill mid-way through the broadcast. Without our presenter and pundits being so well briefed, this would have been disastrous so advice for future producers would be to make sure that you've got plenty of content researched and ready to talk about.

As with FTOs, thorough research of candidates and their campaigns was essential if we were to provide insightful interviews for viewers to watch and in terms of interviewing, we found that winners interviewed well on their policies and campaigns despite being in a (in some cases very) emotional state. Future producers should look at keeping this rather than asking the same old 'How are you feeling?' question to every candidate.

Note from Producer
This year, YUSU Elections were a great success. Our 60 Second Manifestos amassed over 105,000 hits over the course of the campaign period and YSTV were given the right to reveal who was running for what before any other society.

One major issue with this production is liaising with YUSU and URY - this meant that both of our carefully constructed introductions got cut short. I'd advise any future producers to have a floor manager to act as liaison between us and YUSU/URY to make sure that our show goes out okay.

Matt also advise that producers be given access to Comms sets so that they can talk to presenters during Result night. On a show like this, there were times when Matt needed to talk to Jess when we were live but he couldn't - it frustrated both Matt and Jess that we couldn't communicate so when she had to ad-lib she had to do so with very little help.

Spotlight is a Magazine show started in 2014, a successor to Monday Evening Live. Unfortunately, MEL was restricted by the intention of being broadcast only on a Monday, in the evening, and Live. It was ratified at the beginning of 2014-15 academic year, with Sam Nicholson at the helm. Due to degree commitments, the production passed to Kenric Yuen in January of 2015.

Spotlight was also the title of a previous YSTV production in 2010, now retconned to be Series 1 as Sam couldn't think of a better title for the new show after a month of trying!

Show Format:
Spotlight was created for members to experience a simple live studio show set-up. The show is headed by an executive producer, with each episode produced by a relatively in-experienced member of the station, to help learn or experience how production works. Or at least that was the theory. It hasn't happened so far.

The show is set up with three cameras and two sofas in the set, where the presenter(s) sit on one side, and any interviewee(s) on the other. Typically the plasma either goes in the middle or off to one side depending on how much space can be invented in the studio - for Ep3 it was used to show images and slides relevant to that segment of the show, but for the other episodes it didn't get set up.

Title Sequence
The title sequence was created by Sam Nicholson, and customised to the content featured on each show. It's built out of a Premiere project for the video tiles and an After Effects project to actually generate it - I'm sure if you can find it you'll figure it out!

At the conclusion of the 2014-15 run, the best piece of advice to give to a future producer of something Spotlight would be not to try and do a live show every other week by yourself (especially not in final year), either tag team with someone else and take alternate weeks or adjust the schedule to be further apart! ~SN

Rw776: Some notes on final

For 2014, BoB happened in week 9 of Spring term, and was produced by Robert Walker and Sam Nicholson with 'Production Bitch' Lloyd Wallis. Together, they set out with the plan to broadcast both the heats and the final live. As is probably expected, many grand plans were drawn up, all of which were scrapped for a very simple set-up about a week before it all started - mainly due to key components (like room bookings) falling through.

Heats
The heats, held in Courtyard on the Monday and Wednesday, were a source of much issue to plan. We weren't allowed access to Courtyard before 18:00, so had 2 and a half hours to set up all the OB kit. This was further complicated by the plan to do a proper broadcast mix for our audio. These issues were somewhat alleviated by telling the crew that they were going to turn up at YSTV at 17:00, and both help rig and de-rig the kit. After a testing at Elections, Kenobi was also used.
In the end, both heats were set up in plenty of time, in a fairly stress free environment, with no major failures. They also broadcasted constantly for the entire shows. A slight issue with one of the capture cards was discovered, and a small misunderstanding by Robert resulted in the headers for the recording of Monday sort of not to be a thing.

Final
The final took place in D-Bar, making use of Derwent's stage. This didn't go quite as smoothly as the heats, with broadcast starting slightly after the first act started performing. This was partly due to a couple of kit failures (Something went wrong with tally, MuxControl didn't work as expected, and Howard was refusing to respond to commands) and the attempt to do a slightly more ambitious set-up than the heats. Overall, however, the broadcast went well and we got some great coverage.

This was unfortunately of little use, as he ended up failing to progress to his fourth and final year. Although the University still agreed to give him a Bachelor's degree.

After graduating, Robert spend a short time working for the University's Audio Visual department - and had mixed success in convincing other members of YSTV that there is a department on campus that can be really helpful to the society. This also gave him enough of an excuse to continue doing stuff for YSTV, at least until the end of the 2014/15 academic year.
The live show took place on Saturday 16th November, running for 2 hours. It was produced by Helen Hobin, directed by Sam Nicholson, and presented by Grace Winpenny and Matt Judge. Involving a range of live music acts, presenter challenges and VTs, the show - combined with Chris Wall and Helen Hobin's pledge to wear Pudsey onesies for 7 days straight - raised £608.

The Live Show
Live Music
The first act was Stewart Crank, on vocals and guitar, who played a range of songs including 'With a Little Help From My Friends' by the Beatles. Next was Thea Maxwell, playing her own songs, also on vocals and guitar. Finally, BNOC and YUSU President Kallum Taylor and guitarist Robert Grout played a medley of songs which they'd composed earlier that day, all inspired by popular York club, 'The Willow', and including the memorable refrain: 'I'm a mother-loving B-N-O-C!'.

Presenter Challenges
The primary presenter challenge, 'The Great Bear Bake Off', was prerecorded and used as a VT. Two other challenges took place during the live show. The first involved Matt and Grace being given two sets of face-paint, kindly lent by Liz Williams, and instructed to paint each other's faces as animals, whilst guessing from the colours and techniques used by the other person what they were being painted as. However, this was made slightly difficult by the fact that both presenters wore glasses, which had to be taken off for the painting - and therefore when the challenge ended they were slightly surprised by the effects which they had created - to put it bluntly, they looked like an ill dog and a tired orange. The second challenge began when they were given two giant Pudsey gingerbread cookies and a packet of coloured icing tubes. They were told to turn over the cookies and using the icing tubes draw another famous animal icon. Grace created a frowning Rudolph-esque bear whilst Matt somewhat ingeniously used the opportunity to make a portrait of Chris Wall, within his Pudsey onesie, of course. Chris was the judge for this challenge, and declared that Matt had won.

Other Acts & Interviews
Chris Wall performed a magic act, using his mind-reading abilities and card skills to bamboozle the presenters, before being interviewed about his magic. Helen and Chris also appeared earlier in the show, to discuss Children in Need and the experience of living encased within a onesie. This led Chris to tell an alarming story involving vodka and a little girl in a queue.

VTs
* Pudsey 007: The first VT showed Pudsey arriving from the bus at library bridge, and making his way across campus, James Bond style. Filmed and produced by Helen and Charlotte Bennington, using original music composed by Rob Drane.

* Mr & Mrs Pudsey: This endearingly romantic video showed Chris and Helen mucking around in their Pudsey onesies, including shopping for honey
in Costcutter, dancing atop Central Hall and playing a terrible game of tennis - beautifully filmed by Tim Copeland.

* BrassNeck Sax Quartet: A music performance by Grace's quartet - Soprano: Katie Wood, Alto: Grace Winpenny, Tenor: Sam Johnson, Baritone: Nick Jones.

* Gabrielle Aplin: Matt Judge got an exclusive interview with this wonderful singer-songwriter, talking about everything from her progress in the music industry to toothbrushes.

* How to Train Your Teddy: English Literature Lecturer Jonathan Brockbank kindly agreed to deliver an onslaught of bear-themed puns in a seminar room full of teddy bears - an insight into the inner thoughts of students.

* The Hostage Situation: Cutting straight into this VT from the previous one (due to technical issues during the live show, remedied by creative editing) we find Lloyd Wallis and Pudsey gaffer-taped and under a spotlight, desperately in need of £50 to save them. Narrated by the epic voice of Greg Ebdon, Menagerie Man, played by Dominic Matthews, steps up to save the day in this extremely bizarre story.

* BNOC Flashmob Teaser: A glimpse into the effort that went into the next VT...

* BNOC Flashmob: On Friday 15th November YSTV combined forces with Dance Soc and the YUSU Sabbs to stage a flashmob on Vanbrugh Paradise, aiming to gather a few pennies and raise awareness of the cause and YSTV's appeal. Dancing to Christina Aguilera's 'Candyman', Chris Wall began the performance, before being joined by the 'jellyfish' that is Kallum Taylor and the rest of the Sabbs. Choreographed by the talented Dance Soc team.

* Teddy Bear's Picnic: Basically a bunch of cuddly animals having a picnic and discussing the work and history of Children in Need, filmed and wiggled by Georgia Woodroffe and Helen, and given voiceovers by the ever-talented Greg Ebdon. Tom Woffenden sang an original recording of the 'Teddy Bear's Pinic' song, for which an altered version of the music was composed by Rob Drane.

* The Great Bear Bake Off: The main presenter challenge, this was set in the student kitchen of Charlotte Bennington, and features Matt and Grace attempting to bake a Pudsey-themed bake whilst hindered by the fact that they couldn't use their own arms. Instead, limbs were provided by Helen and Charlotte, which led to eggs cracked into the pouch of Matt's apron, flour in the air and one cake being held out of the window. However, things took a surprising turn when Matt added toothpaste to Grace's cake without her noticing. Filmed and judged by Sam Nicholson, who decided that the toothpaste-y cake was refreshing and won on 'sheer innovation'.

* Acting Up: Helen visited the Riding Lights Theatre in York, to interview director Kelvin about 'Acting Up', a drama workshop for young people with special needs or disabilities. They receive funding from BBC Children in Need, and we wanted to show where donations go locally. Filmed by Tim Copeland.

Producer's Notes
This section is intended to help future producers of Children in Need by giving a run-down of what went well and what went slightly less well.

The Good
* The set and props were thought through quite far in advance, allowing for balloons, bunting and badges galore, and the white boards were nicely repainted during the afternoon of the show, covering any scratch marks etc.

* Many new faces were involved in the live show and the production of VTs, which is lovely, as CiN is intended to be a nice first show for freshers/new-comers.

* Presenters Matt and Grace and director Sam Nicholson did a wonderful job of keeping everything smooth and calm, despite the ever-changing running order and a few technical melt-downs.

* The live acts, both music and magic, were very good, and the set was made even more beautiful by David Heaton's sparkling dot lights; it was also brilliant(ly entertaining) to have YUSU President Kallum Taylor rapping about Willow and how the 'funk' will bring you 'to your knees'.

* It was in HD, which (despite MEL beating us to the broadcast) led to many screen-strokings and happy glances.

* There was a strong range of VTs, from music and kidnapping to cooking and picnics, and we were really pleased to be able to show where the donations go, by interviewing the director of 'Acting Up'.

* We raised £608 and, despite a few tense moments on the night, generally had a wonderful time!

The Bad
* Helen and a wonderful crew of helpers (Chris, Kieron, Matt) may have still been editing a few VTs whilst the show went on...sorry! (Will try not to succumb to sleep again).

* In the immortal words of Sam Nicholson: "The VT server was a pile of sh*t and was re-written over Christmas".

* It was ever so warm in the studio.

* More thought should have been given (by Helen) into the presenter challenges - whilst they were quite interesting in theory, we forgot to set a time limit - perhaps some exciting background music should be used to prevent silences whilst the presenters work, though Grace did a good job of humming instead.

* Edit 1 melted. We actually had to put a real fan next to it.

* The concept of sleep didn't really exist for Helen in the week prior to (and most of the week after) the show. It appears editing is addictive. Unfortunately, anyone who tried to make her sleep inevitably suffered the same fate.

Press & Publicity
The BBC wrote a paragraph about our efforts on their Children in Need BBC Blog: "That's a crazy amount of stuff going on for a good cause, we’re sure you’ll agree - and there's more! The awesome students at York Student Television (YSTV), York University’s very own campus TV channel, put together a great BBC Children in Need-themed broadcast featuring all the characteristics of the charity’s annual Appeal show and giving them a distinct York University twist. Two students, Grace and Matt, presented the show which featured live music, onesie mayhem, broken eggs and funny sketches! You can check out the show here, and of course, a huge thank you to all at YSTV for going to such a huge effort to raise money!"

BBC Radio York mentioned YSTV too, although sadly didn't interview Kallum Taylor as they'd suggested.

Helen Hobin gave a video interview for the York Press, filmed by Christopher Parker, and student newspaper Nouse came along to the BNOC Flashmob to take photographs and tweet about the event.
Sarah Mesterton-Gibbons became a member of YSTV in October of 2014, and was elected Outside Broadcast Coordinator in January of 2015. She produced Children in Need 2014 along with Matthew Ingram, Amy Wilson, and Robyn Place. She and Kenric Yuen co-produced Roses 2015 (a huge sporting tournament between York and Lancaster), for which Sarah produced five daytime studio shows. Sarah wants to be a children's television producer some day, and worked at a PBS member TV station in Florida before starting her MA degree in Psycholinguistics at York. She also worked for the reality TV show Say Yes to the Dress: Atlanta, as an associate producer on location. Sarah really loves making telly, and has a love/dislike relationship with autocue. She has a really, really long and complicated last name (hence the abbreviation, M-G). Sarah plays Quidditch in her spare time, and doesn't eat meat (aka, vegetarianism...everyone has an -ism these days). She was awarded "YSTV Mum" at the 2015 Floppy Awards.

The FLOPPYs are a joke awards event started in 2006 in response to the dreadfulness of the YUMAs that year. They were created by Matthew Tole and Sarah Leese, the new and outgoing Station Directors at the time. They were named the FLOPPYs because that was the best object they could come up for prizes - floppy disks. After some discussion, it became an acronym: For the Love Of the People and Programmes of YSTV.

The awards continued after 2006 with many regular categories, including Nicest Member. New awards were also introduced including The Bew Award (for Doing a Bew), named after Emma Bew and the Alex Muller Award for Presentness. In recent years, the floppy disks have been augmented with (uncategorised) Deeply Valued Departed discs for the graduating members. Traditionally the awards are organised by the new and outgoing Station Directors and the Social Sec, and held upstairs at Evil Eye.

Rw776: Condemning of rig and YuStart

On the 06/12/2013, the old ceiling supported lighting rig was declared unsafe and was condemned. This left YSTV without a lighting rig until April 2015, when a new floor standing replacement was purchased and installed.

This was mentioned to YUSU, who then organised for an engineer from TSS to come in and assess the rig.

Location and Goodfest
Fairly early on in the preparation for Woodstock, it was mentioned that Woodstock would not be happening in its normal location of Vanbrugh. The exact location changed several times, up until about two weeks before the day, before finally settling on the Roger Kirk Centre. This year was also a somewhat stripped back Woodstock, with a main indoor stage, and a much smaller outdoor 'acoustic' stage, powered by Bandsoc's PA. Due to the rapid changes in plans (often multiple times in the same day), URY suggested looking into whether it would be easier to cover Goodfest instead - which, by a quirk of planning, was happening on the same day on the other campus. About a week and a half before the event(s), it was decided to not try to cover either of these events, but both of them. This led to some referring to that weekend as Woodfest, Goodstock, Woulda Coulda Shoulda, and Darude Shitstorm (URY).
Since then, Robert has learnt the value of plug-mounted RCD's, and YUSU worked with us on getting a more acceptable COSHH solution in place. The lighting rig was a whole different type of fun. Main Stage
Using similar plans to previous years, minus the jib and roaming camera, the Main Stage ran 12pm-midnight.

Indoor Stage
2 cameras on either side of the stage, halfway down Vanbrugh Dining Hall. Occasionally the cameras were moved and operated.
In future, the producer would suggest that one camera is a static at the back of the hall on stage deck, whilst one camera is placed to the left of the stage, on the side of the window half-way down the room, because exposure.

Acoustic Stage
V-bar, in normal 'Vanbrugh Jazz' location. Organised fairly last minute, Lloyd Wallis found a way of placing the single camera on a short wall, surrounded by Hazard Tape.
NB: camera in V-Bar is hard. Avoid.

The Good
* Tech Helpdesk - always manned by at least one techie, if there was an issue you could phone and that techie would send someone to help.
* Co-ordinating with URY. Radio are cool and this show seems to have strengthened our broadcast-media-bond.
* Finally being told when and where the Woodstock committee meetings were.
* It's so pretty! (The main stage especially)
* The VTs - Grace painstakingly created 20 VTs of interviews with Sabbs, RAG Officers and many of the acts. This meant the presenters had guidance on what to talk about if they wanted to use it, helping to focus comments. Acts' background information was also provided to the presenters.
* Editing the Indoor (by Sam Nicholson) and Acoustic (by Grace Winpenny) Stages by Christmas 2014.
* Grace was ever-so-slightly stressed throughout.
* Better communication between Tech and Production could have been implemented on both sides. Perhaps someone who understands both aspects could be assigned for future big OBs to keep both sides happy.
* Streaming three stages at once.
* Greg Ebdon's return - the producer was incredibly grateful for his impeccable wisdom.
* Producers shared responsibility on the day, Grace prepared all the pre-production things, whilst Ellen oversaw the day's events.
* Peter Eskdale and his beautiful graphics.
* Chris Wall's 'spooling' expertise.
* We had a trailer! (https://ystv.co.uk/watch/woodstock/2014/Promo/)

The Almost-Good
* Severe lack of Crew, could have social-media'd in advance to get more almumni. Indoor stage was un-manned for most of the day.
* Could have better organised and communicated between producers.
* The de-rig, whilst efficient, was impacted by the lack of crew. It was daylight when we finished. Sleep was much-needed.
* Producers could have communicated better with porters and other staff.
* Last minute room cancellations meaning one of our much needed rooms was taken to store exam papers. We didn't get an email informing us of the cancellation. It just happened.
* Nearly having wireless camera running, then well-meaning crew abandoning manning the indoor stage to attempt a fix.
* NaSTA Best Music 2015 (entry can be found here: https://ystv.co.uk/watch/nasta-2015/music/) feedback (actually this was pretty good, very constructive!) Because efforts were focused on main stage, indoor stage looked less pretty and cameras need to be balanced every now and then. However, the edit was 'musical' and the producer wanted to tell the story and show the huge scale of the event, rather than focusing on just the main stage.
*Techie bugs with sound - editing for NaSTA was a nightmare because main stage recording was 20 mins out of sync by the end. It took until march when Grace Winpenny retried the files from David Heaton's newly acquired Salford base and eventually copied them to Pending Edits before Main Stage could be begun.
* Next time, perhaps do a time-lapse of rigging, it would look cool as part of a VT or in the NaSTA entry!
*Outdoor stage may or may not be edited by Woodstock 2015. Files can be located on Pending Edits. Go wild.

Live on the Lawn is YSTV's live outdoor music show, broadcast to get us out of the studio in beautiful sunshine without the load of a full OB, and often to test out equipment ahead of full OBs such as Woodstock. It is usually performed from the lawn outside our G/046 window, sometimes with links and interviews from within the studio. It affords us the unusual opportunity of having the floor/studio within sight and speaking distance of the gallery.

History
Some incarnations of Live on the Lawn have been more casual than others, including some unannounced stream tests.
It featured Stewart Crank, Lucy Walters and Isaac Lister, presented by Chris Wall and Matt Judge.

It remains the only YSTV show to have its own album. The stereo mix was recorded to the Zoom R16 for use in the on-demand edit, then cut into an EP by Greg Ebdon, available from http://ystv.co.uk/static/downloads/YSTV_Live_on_the_Lawn_EP.zip.
