Unbiassed?
I think in the interests of a neutral reporting of historical events the opening paragraph to this needs changing. There seems to be some implication that people who left in 2000 would be expected to resist change to the constitution/policy, but since there weren't any drafts before 2000 graduation it'd be hard to comment on this.

As I recall these were two of the most dreary and dull documents ever, which (remembering this is a student society and not a multibillion dollar broadcasting corporation) should generally stay in the filing cabinet where they belong. If there was no constitution at all I'm sure YSTV would keep going just the same.

The one (singular) useful rule was that you weren't allowed to work on exposed mains equipment alone in the station: one person to do the work, and another to ring the ambulance. Sprow 08:24, 8 June 2007 (BST)

Nice to find someone else who got bored rigid by the constitution...you are spot on when you say the station would keep going without it, I was always mystified why some people were obsessed by it! Jonathan 09:29, 8 June 2007 (BST)

MikeP-J: Reworded the opening paragraph, ten years after it was written, addressing Sprow's comments in the talk page

The constitution was rewritten in 2001. Up until this point there were certain named roles that existed in the Constitution and then others that were created in the Policy. It was decided to move all the roles into the Constitution to give them equal status as officers of the society, and to group them into four teams.

* Administration team, headed by the Studio Manager
* Commercial team, headed by the Commercial Director
* Technical team, headed by the Technical Director
* Production team, headed by the Production Director

Within each team were a number of more junior positions - the idea being that in the event of a position being vacant the relevant team leader would carry out their duties.

The Constitution was drafted by a small committee (Cally Nixon and Thea Darricotte were both on it) but most of the text was actually written by Michael Prior-Jones.

The next rejig was the 2005 Constitution, which restored the idea of creating junior roles through a Policy - the idea being that the policy could be more easily changed without needing to go through the process of amending the constitution.
YSTV constitution 30th April 2001

# Introduction
#* York Student Television (often referred to as YSTV) is a student society based at the University of York, and provides a television service to the staff and students of the University. This document sets out the details of how the society is organised and administered.
#* It may be helpful to read this constitution in conjunction with the current society Policy (see section 10) and with the constitution of York University Student Union.
# Aims and objectives
#* The society aims to provide a television service to the University of York campus, and involve its members in all aspects of the operations of this service. As a part of this, the society seeks to produce original programme content of interest and relevance to the society’s membership and to the student body at large.
## Ordinary membership is open to all, subject to the rules defined by YUSU.
##	Ordinary membership may be withdrawn from any member in the event that they have committed a flagrant and wilful breach of the society Constitution or Policy. The member must be notified in writing or by email at least six days in advance of the society meeting at which the decision will be taken. The member in question has the right to defend themselves in person at the meeting or issue a written statement to the Secretary of the society defending their actions. The matter must be discussed, and then a majority vote will decide whether the membership is to be retracted. Anyone losing their membership forfeits their subscription.
##	Honorary membership may be conferred upon anyone by means of a majority vote at a society meeting. It may also be withdrawn by majority vote at a society meeting, but the member in question should receive at least six days notice, by email, of the impending vote. ##	All officers have a right of access to the Station and a right to an official society email address.
##	All officers have a responsibility to uphold the society Constitution and Policy and to carry out their duties as defined by the Constitution and Policy.
##	In the event of an officer failing to carry out their duties in accordance with the society Constitution and Policy or abusing their powers, a society meeting may take a vote of no-confidence in them. The officer must be notified in writing or by email at least six days in advance of the meeting at which the vote is to take place. Michael Prior-Jones (known as Mike these days) joined YSTV in his first week at York in October 1999, having previously spent a gap year at BBC Research & Development. He studied for an MEng in Electronic Engineering and spent a lot of time doing YSTV stuff, as well as being involved in a less life-taking-over way with URY and Gilbert & Sullivan Society.

He lived in 21 Danum Road with Cally Nixon, Kevin Bowman, and John Biltcliffe.
On graduating from York in June 2003 he worked for BBC R&D until June 2005, when he took a job with the British Antarctic Survey as Communications Manager at Rothera Research Station. He spent 18 months at Rothera and filmed an Antarctic station ident with a penguin and various other footage which Mark Friend edited into VTs for Limited Edition.
For the 2002 tournament, Michael Prior-Jones and Kevin Bowman travelled to Lancaster and repeated the previous year's successful formula of running around and filming short clippings of as many different matches as possible before editing them together to make a highlights-so-far video to be shown at the Roses Ball on the Saturday night. This was during the period when YSTV didn't have its own OB camera (the original Panasonic MS5 having failed), so we took a hired DV camera. Kevin sat in a college bedroom and edited, whilst Michael ran round trying to get as much footage as possible.

A particular un-highlight of the event that year was turning up at The Carleton nightclub in Morecambe at about 5pm on the Saturday in order to set up for playing the video - it's never good to see what clubs look like in broad daylight!
Analogue vision mixers need all their sources to be genlocked - that is, the signals must all be synchronised - in order to work. In 2000, YSTV's Panasonic F10 cameras had genlock capability and so did the [Amiga], but everything else (VT machines, the Mac edit suite, graphics computers, etc) needed to go through a framestore synchroniser. At that time, we had a single P164 that could act as a framestore synchroniser, but this was rather limiting as it meant we could only handle one non-genlocked source at a time. Michael Prior-Jones bought a dual-channel framestore second-hand (found on the uk.tech.broadcast newsgroup, I think...) and this gave us the capability to handle three sources into the Cox T8 vision mixer.

The framestore also had a little remote control panel which could be used to do cuts and fades between the two channels, which led us to use it once or twice as a self-contained OB vision path. It became largely redundant with the coming of Magic DaVE.

Elections 2003 was broadcast on 7th March 2003, and produced by Cally Nixon and Chris Thornton.

Unlike previous Derwent election nights, where the set and control room were both placed in the JCR, this year the terrace room next door was used for the set and the JCR for the control area. This allowed as much noise to be made in the control area as was needed!

The new set was designed and built by John Biltcliffe and Andrew Talbot. The small cream set boards were seperated by tall thin purple boxes with a number of circular holes in each. These holes were covered in tissue paper and a long bulb was placed in each box, creating a pleasing glow on camera. These light boxes were in fact inspired by part of the set BBC Sport's snooker coverage was using at the time! The desk used since SU Elections 2001 was placed in front of this. For the interview set a "coffee bar" was constructed to try and bring a more relaxed approach to this area.

Using the terrace room did have its problems. It is a fairly small room to try and cram two fairly large sets into, and once lights, cameras and Big Telly had been hauled up the stairs outside and added to the mix there wasn't a lot of room to move!

There were technical problems on the night which led to Giles Burdett's campus map graphics not making their debut until twelve months later, and the programme itself wasn't able to go on air until around 9.45pm. The programme also suffered from using the dying Cox T8 (8-input) vision mixer which gave out mid-programme. YSTV's brand new Panasonic Max (4-input) was rushed back from HQ at the other end of campus and rapidly connected into the setup, leaving the presenters filling in sound only over graphics and VTs whilst this ocurred!

Fillers on the night included WoodenSpoon, the final of Games Disaster, Have I Got News For YUSU and that year's NaSTA Best Broadcaster film.

The title sequence used time-lapse footage of that year's Battle of the Bandsrig and other campus clips, edited by Ed Jellard and going on to be highly commended at 2004's NaSTA awards. The theme tune was an original composition by Rob Humphrey, Kev Gedge and others, which went on to be used for 2004's programme and 2005's Bona Dicta specials and 60 Second Manifesto. It was revived (in a remixed form) for 2007's show.

Other than the technical problems listed the content on the night went smoothly. The programme's main legacy was the set, which remains in use to this day. Immeditately afterwards the links area became YSTV's generic news and current affairs set, and was used for YSTV Week, Bona Dicta and many future election night programmes. In later years it made all manner of appearances on shows such as YSTV Sport, The Sofa Show, FourPlay (repainted orange), YSTV News (repainted red and silver) and many, many more besides. The coffee bar appeared on many subsequent election night programmes, but it has since been used most regularly in panel game-type shows, for which it isn't entirely suited due to the sharp point of the wood join at the back where the presenter sits, as it was originally designed to be sat in front of. However it serves the purpose well, and has featured on Have I Got News For YUSU, The Great Big Massive YSTV Christmas Quiz Game Show Thingy 2003, LipSync, Welcome To Venus and Your Answer's Rubbish to name but a few. All of this is a testament to the hard work put in designing and building in early 2003.

MikeP-J: Remembering why the second attempt didn't get edited!

WoodenSpoon was Michael Prior-Jones' cookery show, done in a Blue Peter-ish sort of style. Michael wrote, presented and directed it. This was intended to be a serious cooking programme, unlike the Cooking With series that preceeded it. The programme has a reputation as being cursed in some way, as it never really got filmed satisfactorily after five attempts!

Attempt one
In January 2000, flushed with enthusiasm and spurred on by Chris Parker, a bunch of us dragged a whole load of YSTV kit to the then new-and-shiny James College L block and filmed the show in Michael's kitchen. The equipment used was two Panasonic F10 cameras, the Panasonic MS4 and the Polar vision mixer. Kevin Bowman's bedroom, being next door to the kitchen, was used as the control room - the camera cables were fed out of the kitchen window and back in through the bedroom window.
It took all morning to set up (mostly because we didn't understand how to genlock the cameras) and we then recorded it in the afternoon. It failed to actually record because someone had connected the vision mixer directly to the monitor and the VHS recorder to itself, so we got a tape that had sound but no pictures.

Pictures here: Woodenspoon 2000

Attempt two
Returning to the scene of our former failure in the summer term of 2000 (it was Roses weekend, I think), we again rigged up the kit in James and used John Biltcliffe's shiny new Pinnacle editing system to capture the video directly to hard disk. This time it did all record, but was never edited - I think John had issues with the lip-sync, and since all the footage was on his personal machine we didn't get it back after he left York.

Attempt three - The Big Breakfast
The concept of student cooking was used when in June 2000 YSTV were invited down to The Big Breakfast. With the chance to compete for 90 seconds of national airtime, YSTV proposed to bring student cooking to the masses. Unfortunately the Bournemouth student TV station C6 beat them to the slot, so once again Michael Prior-Jones didn't get to show off his cooking skills on TV. The visit was chronicled in YSTV Does It Bigger.

Attempt four
This was much later - in February 2003. The show was shot on a Saturday morning at Lorna Mitchell's shared house near the Victoria Hotel. The multi-camera approach was done away with in favour of some careful planning and a single DV camera, operated by Andrew Talbot, and with Jonathan Bufton on sound. There were some quite inventive attempts at credits, with Michael and Jonathan spelling their names out in Lorna's alphabet fridge magnets and mixing them up, and later reversing the footage!

Andrew edited the show together, but unfortunately due to a muddle with the sound mixing the background music was mixed too loudly and the result is quite hard to understand.
Attempt five
A final attempt to produce WoodenSpoon was made in April 2004, after Michael had graduated, by Jen Ayerst, filmed in Jonathan Bufton's kitchen usual similar methods as attempt four. However the food didn't really cook very well, the presenter was nervous and it was never edited. Maybe one day someone will do the idea justice!
