Hui-Ling Phillips joined YSTV in Freshers' Fair 2016, her second year of study (even after wanting to in first year but being too intimidated). Mostly because [[Sam Willcocks]] shoved a flyer into her hand (after her friends blanked him) and later, at YSTV's stall, got very enthusiastic about tech as he was the only tech member at that time. Luckily it turned out she ''was'' interested in the tech aspect. <br />
<br />
She soon started spending most evenings at YSTV for many hours. Surprisingly not for shows in the beginning, but to help out with [[The Great Untangling of 2016]].<br />
<br />
Her housemates assumed if she was missing for what would be worryingly long periods of time, that she was just spending all of her time at YSTV and sleeping (presumably) at home in-between going to YSTV. On one occasion when leaving the house (to go to YSTV) a housemate exclaimed "I haven't seen you in like a week!" and in a group chat her nickname was set to ''Mike TV'' because TV was ''all' she talked about.<br />
<br />
YSTV is possibly the best thing Hui-Ling decided to do in her academic career.<br />
<br />
Less notably; her degree is currently in Physics and despite YSTV taking up all of her free time, is going well.<br />

Hui-Ling Phillips joined YSTV in Freshers' Fair 2016, her second year of study (even after wanting to in first year but being too intimidated). Mostly because [[Sam Willcocks]] shoved a flyer into her hand (after her friends blanked him) and later, at YSTV's stall, got very enthusiastic about tech as he was the only tech member at that time. Luckily it turned out she ''was'' interested in the tech aspect. <br />

Hui-Ling Phillips joined YSTV in Freshers' Fair 2016, her second year of study (even after wanting to in first year but being too intimidated). Mostly because [[Sam Willcocks]] shoved a flyer into her hand (after her friends blanked him) and later, at YSTV's stall, got very enthusiastic about tech as he was the only tech member at that time. Luckily it turned out she ''was'' interested in the tech aspect. <br />
<br />
She soon started spending most evenings at YSTV for many hours. Surprisingly not for shows in the beginning, but to help out with [[The Great Untangling of 2016]].<br />
<br />
Her housemates assumed if she was missing for what would be worryingly long periods of time, that she was just spending all of her time at YSTV and sleeping (presumably) at home in-between going to YSTV. On one occasion when leaving the house (to go to YSTV) a housemate exclaimed "I haven't seen you in like a week!" and in a group chat her nickname was set to ''Mike TV'' because TV was ''all' she talked about.<br />
<br />
YSTV is possibly the best thing Hui-Ling decided to do in her academic career.<br />
<br />
Less notably; her degree is currently in Physics and despite YSTV taking up all of her free time, is going well.<br />

Strong and Stable was the name given to YSTV's overnight coverage of GE2017 with The Lemon Press. It was envisioned as an alternative and comedic take on the elections. As [[Katherine Bell]] pointed out: "If people want serious, they'll watch the BBC". The multiple livestreams streamed on both YSTV and Facebook live in 3 increments at 10-12pm, 1-3am and finally a more serious political debate show from 4-6am. It was named after the popular 2017 meme about Theresa May's 'Strong and Stable' leadership and the joke that YSTV streams were rarely strong nor stable.<br />
<br />
==Pre-Production==<br />
There were vague intentions to cover the elections since the current PM Theresa May unexpectedly called the election back in April 2017. However since the election was called for June 8th just after exam season, pre-production was put on the back-burner until anyone could be bothered. Turns out no one really could, so much like the election campaigning itself it was quite a last minute affair. There was a compilation video of YSTV's political content of 2017 created by [[Raquel Bartra]] to advertise the stream which was released on YSTV facebook before the show. Purposefully bad graphics were also created by [[Emily Friend]] to advertise the stream on social media. An example of the horrific colour scheme and ironic use of comic sams can be seen in the logo recorded here.<br />
<br />
The Lemon Press (York's answer to The Private Eye) were invited onto the project to provide VTs, presenters and general anarchy. There was a very productive meeting with our lemony partners where the general outline of the show was discussed. From this meeting it was decided [[Tom Lee]] would help The Lemon Press film VTs with our green screen in the studio. Spoiler alert: Most of these ended up being unbroadcastable. One of the skits about the Queen was bordering on treason so there was some trepidation for the actual live show. <br />

[[Edwin Barnes]] booked YourSpace for the night, intending to set up the OB hours before we went live.<br />
<br />
==The Day of Livestream==<br />
The day of the election stream was at the end of the infamous week of hell from 2-9th June where there was a production every single day. Therefore, everyone was a bit fed up and there wasn't much going on until around 6pm on the night. Since we were supposed to go live at 10pm it was decided there wasn't enough time to set up an OB in YourSpace and the studios would have to do. There was then a rush against time to build a decent-ish set with two a red sofa, an armchair, setboard, photos of politicians, a precariously hung glowing "On Air" sign with "Just About" written above as well as multiple balloons. [[Hui-Ling Phillips]], [[Katherine Bell]] and [[Raquel Bartra]] went to Aldi to procure catering as there was a huge crew arriving.<br />

==The Show==<br />
The show was a mixture or farce and serious politics there were games such as<br />
* Political Twister (party seats matched the colour spots)<br />
* If I were PM (an improv exercise for our presenters where they played PM and Interviewer) <br />
* Feed the Crisps to Theresa May (as it sounds)<br />
* Tracey or Trump (where the presenters had to guess whether the quotes onscreen where from Donald Trump or Tracey Beaker)<br />

There were many running gags in the comedy shows from 10-12pm and 1-3am presented by [[Andy Tallon]] and [[Josh Chapman]]. These included:<br />
* A loud MLG horn patched through to the studio whenever there was a seat won (to the constant surprise and annoyance of the presenters). The Director on shift would then give the details of the seat won over comms to be reported while the LED lights would change the colour of the set boards to the wining party's colour. <br />
* The presenters getting progressively more intoxicated and bewildered by the antics of The Lemon Press<br />
* A bin which had been labelled 'Jeremy Cor-bin'<br />
* A shoddy green screen constructed in the break between the streams onto which twitter memes and graphics were chroma keyed<br />
* A terrifying clown mask and other props and costumes found in YSTV's bottomless props draws<br />
* Directors trying to trick the not so politically informed presenters into announce fake results such as "Hugh Janus" having won a swing seat for Labour<br />
<br />
The show from 4-6am was produced by [[Joel Mitchell]] and invited political commentators from many student political parties and publications to comment on the results and predict the nature of the hung parliament which was beginning to become inevitable. This show has a more reserved set up with 5 stools set up around a screen where two presenters and 3 guests (around 10 guests swapped throughout the two hours) discussed the night. This show utilised VT footage from YSTV's previous coverage of the election period including our coverage of the Corbyn rally and an exclusive interview with Boris Johnson. [[Joel Mitchell]] and [[Benjamin Whybrow]] held the show together by producing, presenting and researching on iPads live on air as comms were temperamental at best.<br />

The Strong and Stable livestream was shortlisted for and won a 2017 [[YUMAs|YUMA]] for best entertainment to the surprise of everyone involved. Especially as YSTV had also been nominated in the same category for [[Behind The Streams]]<br />

Sam was stolen from a [[URY|certain other media society]] around late spring term 2015, when he kind of just appeared at the installation of the [[G/046_Lighting_rig|new lighting rig]]. From there, he hovered in a non committal sort of way, before being elected [[Deputy Technical Director]] that Autumn, at the start of his year in industry. He spent that year pretending to know what was going on, and then was elected Technical Director in the 2016 AGM, in lieu of anyone else being around to do it, a position he held into his final year of study.<br />
<br />
He still wishes he'd got involved sooner.<br />
<br />
=Stuff He's Done=<br />
* Didn't win a 2016 NaSTA for Best Tech. Turned up unannounced on the Sunday and went to the pub anyway.<br />
* Played [[Drive Crash 3]], and apparently won(?!?)<br />
* Server herding, sysadmin and the occasional rebuild (including setting up and commissioning [[Docs:Computing:Attenborough]])<br />
* Crewing most shows in some capacity, often technical but occasionally production-y and even once or twice presenting (sadly mostly during his "bad mustache phase" - don't talk to him about this)<br />
* Was Transport Captain (ok, van driver..) and had a generally fun time at [[Roses 2016]]. Also wore budgie smugglers in line of duty.<br />
* Had lots of members leave around him at the end of 2015-16.<br />
* Helped run Freshers 2016 events. Ran around in circles for much of the week and tried to indoctrinate many many freshers. Some of them even stayed.<br />
* Participated in the minor control room reshuffle of 2016 with [[Peter Eskdale]], [[Robert Walker]], and [[Mike Chislett]].<br />
* Attempted to teach people how to work the good ship YSTV, while still learning how to work it himself.<br />
* In a long tradition of Tech Directors, neglected his degree.<br />
* Loosely orchestrated the frantic [[Unibrass 2017]]/[[Elections 2017#FTOs|FTO Debates 2017]] double bill of a friday/saturday, which involved rigging at the Harrogate International Center (where they hosted Eurovision in the 80s), getting politely kicked out at 1700, driving a van back to York, having an OB ready in Hendrix Hall in time for the FTO debates to start at 2000ish, largely successfully broadcasting said debates, packing down, getting ''some'' sleep, getting up at 0600, driving the van back to Harrogate and broadcasting brass bands for a day, packing down, going to McDonalds, and then driving the van home before faceplanting in bed.<br />

Hui-Ling Phillips joined YSTV in Freshers' Fair 2016, her second year of study (even after wanting to in first year but being too intimidated). Mostly because [[Sam Willcocks]] shoved a flyer into her hand (after her friends blanked him) and later, at YSTV's stall, got very enthusiastic about tech as he was the only tech member at that time. Luckily it turned out she ''was'' interested in the tech aspect. <br />

She soon started spending most evenings at YSTV for many hours. Surprisingly not for shows in the beginning, but to help out with [[The Great Untangling of 2016]].<br />
<br />
Her housemates assumed if she was missing for what would be worryingly long periods of time, that she was just spending all of her time at YSTV and sleeping (presumably) at home in-between going to YSTV. On one occasion when leaving the house (to go to YSTV) a housemate exclaimed "I haven't seen you in like a week!" and in a group chat her nickname was set to ''Mike TV'' because TV was ''all' she talked about.<br />

YSTV is possibly the best thing Hui-Ling decided to do in her academic career.<br />

Hosted by York, YSTV collaborated with [[LA1:TV]] as well as other NaSTA Stations to produce coverage on the annual university sporting competition between York and Lancaster.<br />

=Production=<br />
Due to Roses being hosted in York, the producers were all from YSTV. Initially this was [[Katherine Bell]] as Executive Producer and [[Edwin Barnes]] as Production manager. [[LA1:TV]] gave them many large empty spreadsheets to fill in for crew amongst spreadsheets for tech allocations, timetables etc. <br />
<br />
The crew for Roses kept growing, as connections made at NaSTA 2017 enabled us to enlist the help of crew from Forge TV, LSTV, LSUTV and NaSTA as well. The crew attending was scheduled to be around 90 people over the four days of filming. All of which apparent'y needed roles allocated, crib sheets and call sheets. Therefore voluntarily [[Hui-Ling Phillips]] was enlisted as another producer, the role came under many names, the most common being the ''Director of Better''. <br />
<br />
This year was incredibly successful with a maximum of 6 simultaneous live streams running.<br />
<br />
=Tech=<br />
This was possibly the most technically ambitious Roses to date, with a peak of 6 concurrent livestreams.<br />
<br />
As part of the supporting tech used for Roses, [[Robert Walker]] brought with him two 16TB storage units, which went on to form [[docs:Bruce]]. Also brought by Rob was a video router, which formed the basis of a TX monitoring station.<br />

The stream was run through our [[docs:Computing:Ystvstrm7|stream server]], then forwarded on to [[LA1:TV]]s Wowza system. The streams were broadcast on the Roses Live website, as well as being shown on a screen erected on the side of Central Hall - although the screen was pointing into the lake, rather than at the crowd at Greg's Place.<br />

Sadly this entry did not win, but in the hearts of our members, especially [[Edwin Barnes]] (the producer, director, camera op and editor) and [[Hui-Ling Phillips]] (the audio mixer) will be one of the quickest, last minute edits for submission which had the most beautiful camera angles, hairlights and audio. For context to those not party to the submission debacle, roughly 2.5 hours before the submission deadline [[Hui-Ling Phillips|Hui-Ling]] and [[Edwin Barnes|Edwin]] realised that the audio for the NaSTA Music entry had not been edited. So over [[Hui-Ling Phillips|Hui-Ling]] messaged [[Edwin Barnes|Edwin]] over [[Slack]] while audio editing in the studio, which after a while of messing, it was found had an odd function added to it, so that was very fun but also stressful and worked out, in their ''totally unbiased'' opinion it turned out fantastic!<br />
