The FLOPPYs are a joke awards event started in 2006 in response to the dreadfulness of the [[YUMAs]] that year. They were created by [[Matthew Tole]] and [[Sarah Leese]], the new and outgoing [[Station Directors]] at the time. They were named the FLOPPYs because that was the best object they could come up for prizes - floppy disks. After some discussion, it became an acronym: '''F'''or the '''L'''ove '''O'''f the '''P'''eople and '''P'''rogrammes of '''Y'''STV.

The awards continued after 2006 with many regular categories, including ''Nicest Member''. New awards were also introduced including ''The Bew Award (for Doing a Bew)'', named after [[Emma Bew]] and the ''[[Alex Muller]] Award for Presentness''. In recent years, the floppy disks have been augmented with (uncategorised) '''D'''eeply '''V'''alued '''D'''eparted discs for the graduating members. Traditionally the awards are organised by the new and outgoing [[Station Director]]s and the Social Sec, and held upstairs at [http://www.evileyelounge.com/ Evil Eye].

The point of the FLOPPYs is to give every active member at least one award.

In 2006, the FLOPPYs were held on the steps of York Minster, after the YSTV End of Term Meal. They were presented by [[Matthew Tole]] and [[Sarah Leese]] who had spent an afternoon coming up with the awards, nominations and winners!

Produced by [[Grace Winpenny]] and [[Ellen Dunbavin]], with [[David Heaton]] as Technical Producer, Woodstock 2014 was held on Saturday week 9 Summer 2014. It was challenging, stressful but so much fun, and all of the producers found it to be a rewarding experience.

There were 3 Stages for the event, and YSTV broadcast all of them throughout the day on woodstock.ystv.co.uk

'''Main Stage'''
Using similar plans to previous years, minus the jib and roaming camera, the Main Stage ran 12pm-midnight.

'''Indoor Stage'''
2 cameras on either side of the stage, halfway down Vanbrugh Dining Hall. Occasionally the cameras were moved and operated.
In future, the producer would suggest that one camera is a static at the back of the hall on stage deck, whilst one camera is placed to the left of the stage, on the side of the window half-way down the room, because exposure.

'''Acoustic Stage'''
V-bar, in normal 'Vanbrugh Jazz' location. Organised fairly last minute, [[Lloyd Wallis]] found a way of placing the single camera on a short wall, surrounded by Hazard Tape.
NB: camera in V-Bar is hard. Avoid.

'''The Good'''
* Tech Helpdesk - always manned by at least one techie, if there was an issue you could phone and that techie would send someone to help.
* Co-ordinating with URY. Radio are cool and this show seems to have strengthened our broadcast-media-bond.
* Finally being told when and where the Woodstock committee meetings were.
* It's so pretty! (The main stage especially)
* The VTs - Grace painstakingly created 20 VTs of interviews with Sabbs, RAG Officers and many of the acts. This meant the presenters had guidance on what to talk about if they wanted to use it, helping to focus comments. Acts' background information was also provided to the presenters.
* Editing the Indoor (by [[Sam Nicholson]]) and Acoustic (by [[Grace Winpenny]]) Stages by Christmas 2014.
* Grace was ever-so-slightly stressed throughout.
* Better communication between Tech and Production could have been implemented on both sides. Perhaps someone who understands both aspects could be assigned for future big OBs to keep both sides happy.
* Streaming three stages at once.
* [[Greg Ebdon]]'s return - the producer was incredibly grateful for his impeccable wisdom.
* Producers shared responsibility on the day, Grace prepared all the pre-production things, whilst Ellen oversaw the day's events.

'''The Almost-Good'''
* Severe lack of Crew, could have social-media'd in advance to get more almumni. Indoor stage was un-manned for most of the day.
* Could have better organised and communicated between producers.
* The de-rig, whilst efficient, was impacted by the lack of crew. It was daylight when we finished. Sleep was much-needed.
* Producers could have communicated better with porters and other staff.
* Last minute room cancellations meaning one of our much needed rooms was taken to store exam papers. We didn't get an email informing us of the cancellation. It just happened.
* Nearly having wireless camera running, then well-meaning crew abandoning manning the indoor stage to attempt a fix.
* NaSTA Best Music 2015 (entry can be found here: https://ystv.co.uk/watch/nasta-2015/music/) feedback (actually this was pretty good, very constructive!) Because efforts were focused on main stage, indoor stage looked less pretty and cameras need to be balanced every now and then. However, the edit was 'musical' and the producer wanted to tell the story and show the huge scale of the event, rather than focusing on just the main stage.
*Techie bugs with sound - editing for NaSTA was a nightmare because main stage recording was 20 mins out of sync by the end. It took until march when [[Grace Winpenny]] retried the files from [[David Heaton]]'s newly acquired Salford base and eventually copied them to [[Pending Edits]] before Main Stage could be begun.
* Next time, perhaps do a time-lapse of rigging, it would look cool as part of a VT or in the NaSTA entry!
*Outdoor stage may or may not be edited by [[Woodstock 2015]]. Files can be located on Pending Edits. Go wild.

Grace arrived at York in 2011, keen to investigate the social habits of waterfowl and to do a Music degree. Amazingly, it took her until 2013 to become a member of YSTV. Grace had encountered YSTV on numerous occasions around campus and thought it looked like fun so vowed to join and has pretty much lived in the Station since her 3rd year at York. She is currently studying for an MA in Postproduction with Sound Design and still presents/produces content as a well-deserved break.

Through the kind/crazed encouragement of [[Matt Johnson]], Grace decided to give presenting a go and has never looked back. A personal highlight was co-presenting [[Children in Need 2013]] with [[Matt Judge]] where she demonstrated her baking prowess.

Grace would like to learn more about how not to break computers and listens in awe to the technical/computing-related discussions between [[Sam Nicholson]] and [[Robert Walker]]. She also enjoyed being [[David Heaton]]'s Cable Monkey during the Wednesday semi-final of [[Battle of the Bands 2014]].

She had an amazing time at NaSTA 2014, despite receiving mixed feedback for her 'Best On-Screen Female' Entry. Although she narrowly missed out on being entered again in 2015, Grace still 'really likes to present things' and also 'really likes typing things', and was elected as [[Secretary]] on 14th May 2014 for the 2014-2015 academic year and is enjoying being [[Helen Hobin]]'s right-hand-man for station meetings.

As of the 2014 [[FLOPPYs]] Grace is the proud owner of the 'YSTV Mum' award.

Live on the Lawn 2014

Live on the Lawn took place on Saturday 17th May 2014 (Summer Wk4) running for 1 hour 17 minutes. It was produced and directed by [[Grace Winpenny]], and the assistant producers were [[Ellen Dunbavin]] and [[David Heaton]]. [[Matt Judge]] and [[Chris Wall]] presented the show.

=The Live Show=
Live on the Lawn (LotL) 2014 aimed for even more live content than in 2013 but kept much of the same structure. The set was 'just off the lawn' outside YSTV which meant that technical difficulties were easier to solve than if the show had been a 'real OB'. The main focus was live music acts but the show also included interviews with [[Kieron Moore]] about [[Union]] Episode 3 (which made its debut after LotL), and a Skype Interview with [[Emma Bew]] which was ever so slightly hi-jacked by two of the Union cast...

Rigging began around 12pm, and was supervised by the Tech team, but most of the actual rigging was completed by members who had attended [[OB Training]]. By the [[Technical Director]]'s words of approval, it is safe to say that OB Training was effective and very useful for members with less rigging experience.

=VTs=
From the beginning of time, the production team wanted to minimise the number and length of VTs in LotL, because they felt the emphasis should be on live content. This is because LotL is a warm-up show for [[Woodstock]], [[YSTV]]'s longest Live OB.

==Title Sequence==
Taking inspiration from the [[NaSTA]] award-winning [[Lights on Literature]], the producers decided to create a stop-motion animation title sequence. This was filmed on the Wednesday before the show with [[Helen Hobin]] and [[Grace Winpenny]] moving props around whilst [[Tom Cheyney]] made miracles happen on his camera. Grace then edited the title sequence on the Thursday and the files were ready for Saturday afternoon.

Filming took place on Vanbrugh Bowl (much to the confusion of Music Students and the waterfowl inhabitants of the grass) and props were kindly lent by several [[YSTV]] members, the Props Drawer and from Dramasoc. Whilst the weather was mainly sunny, occasionally the Sun decided to hide, so there are some lighting inconsistencies. Whilst editing, it was decided that Colour Correction was too much fuss and that the differences in lighting added to the quirkiness of the title sequence. The music used in the titles, stings and credits is public domain.

Short sections of the title sequence VT were used as stings for the other VT's.

==Union Episode 3 Promo==
Not made for LotL but used as Episode 3 was shown straight after the show. Gave viewers chance to get to know what [[Union]] is and what to expect from this unique episode.

==Woodstock 2013 highlights==
When procrastination takes hold, editing happens, and VTs are made. The producers had a vague outline of the show in the weeks before LotL, and knew they wanted to talk about last year's Woodstock, so a 58 second VT was made to prompt interviews, and, once again, to bring viewers up to speed, particularly if they had not been to a Woodstock

=Producer's Notes=

==The Good==
* Most of the show was Live, and outdoors, which was one of the producers' main goals - under 5 mins of VTs were used in total.
* The Weather - taking place in the first heatwave of 2014, the weather was sunny and hot, which made for a lots of pretty shots.
* The set-up was efficient and since [[OB Training]] had taken place a few weeks before, more people were able to rig successfully and with [[Robert Walker]]'s approval whilst the Tech team tended to more pressing issues.
* Part of the Producers' vision was to use a different set to our normal live shows, which usually happen in
* No Sofa - the set was pretty, but it needed to be re-arranged after acts, and ended up looking a bit messy
* Cool title sequence, looked really cool, and used public domain music
* Lovely audio recordings were recorded separately by [[Helen Moss]] which were edited into the final full version of the show by [[Grace Winpenny]]
* LotL2014 was the first show to include a live Skype interview! This is credit to of the Tech and Computing teams, particularly the day before the show.
* Props - don't let guests walk away with them though, thanks to Dramasoc and various members of YSTV for lending
* The presenters were brilliant, very natural, good response to direction and potential changes in the show's plan. Also, the producers wanted the presenters not to wear sunglasses, as eyes are the windows to the soul, and the presenters responded nicely to their requests.
* the acts were of a really high standard, future producers should contact people in the music department directly before sending out a general call for acts to perform - the response rate is much better as the acts feel more valued!
* We mostly stuck to the original schedule...
* Green Room was booked, although should have probably booked further in advance than the day before....
* Everyone listened well and was calm and co-operative.

==The Bad==
* Perhaps no need for lighting rig outdoors with blistering heat.
* Umbrellas would have been useful - even in sunshine.
* Comms need to be set-up earlier, esp if the sofa isn't being used! This caused much panic for the director in the hour before the show, but all issues were resolved in the final moments of preparation.
* One act didn't turn up until just about to perform, which would have meant the show had to finish early - always have a contingency plan, planned ahead of the show rather than during the show.
* Perhaps more musical acts/variety would have added more interest. We were aware of the changing microphone set-up required between Leo and Vox. This was managed beautifully by the Lawn Manager and potentially more ensemble acts could be included in future versions of LotL.
* Had ordered inflatable parrot for 89p which only arrived the Tuesday after the show, he now sits in the control room but remains nameless.
* when cameras mysteriously stopped working during Leo's performance, the technical team responded to efficiently within the performance.
* The singing challenge was a little underwhelming, more planning would have been useful here.
* Ran slightly under hoped time - 90 minutes - but as we were about 5 minutes late in starting the show.
* the warmth of everything, which resulted in several melted chocolate fingers.
* Script cards should be printed out earlier and be made more pretty instead of plain white paper....

Grace had encountered YSTV on numerous occasions around campus and thought it looked like fun so vowed to join and has pretty much lived in the Station since her 3rd year at York.

Through the kind/crazed encouragement of [[Matt Johnson]], Grace decided to give presenting a go and has never looked back. A personal highlight was co-presenting [[Children in Need 2013]] with [[Matt Judge]] where she demonstrated her baking prowess.

Grace would like to learn more about how not to break computers and listens in awe to the technical/computing-related discussions between [[Sam Nicholson]] and [[Robert Walker]]. She also enjoyed being [[David Heaton]]'s Cable Monkey during the Wednesday semi-final of [[Battle of the Bands 2014]].

She had an amazing time at NaSTA 2014, despite receiving mixed feedback for her 'Best On-Screen Female' Entry. Grace still 'really likes to present things' and also 'really likes typing things', and was elected as [[Secretary]] on 14th May 2014 for the 2014-2015 academic year and is enjoying being [[Helen Hobin]]'s right-hand-man for station meetings.

Helen always wanted to be a part of YSTV since starting at York University in 2012, however wasn't brave enough to do anything about it until February 2014. After going to the first meeting and realising these people were actually ok, she decided to stay. Within her first week of being a member of YSTV she found herself Sound Op-ing the 2nd heat of [[Battle of the Bands]] 2014 (thanks to [[Sam Nicholson]]!) And the rest, as they say, is history...

She now gets asked various questions regarding sound and microphones and fancy things like compression, EQ and filtering, because she's a Music Technology Electronics student and "knows what she's doing"...

On the 14th May 2014, she was elected as [[Assistant Production Director]] for the 2014-15 academic year. Since then she has been (as the title says) assisting [[Production Director]] [[Kenric Yuen]] with HoP-ing and editing various shows ready to go online for the world to see!

Sam came across YSTV and URY at Fresher's Fair 2010 and decided YSTV looked more fun, and hasn't looked back since. He was the [[Deputy_Computing_Officers|Deputy Computing Officer]] from 2010 through to 2011, then made the step up to [[Computing Officers|Computing Officer]] for the 2011-12 year. Commonly asked whether he was really a fresher in his first year, he spent much of the latter half of his first year and most of his second in YSTV, somewhat to the detriment of his Electronics degree.

Disappeared off (whilst back to being the Deputy Computing Officer) to do an Industrial Placement for the 2012-2013 academic year and returned for 2013-14, as an ordinary member for the first time in a while. Ordinary membership became boring around the Autumn 2013 by-elections, where Sam returned to the Deputy Computing Officer job following the departure of [[Greg Ebdon]]. At the 2014 elections he decided to leave the Computing team to fresh new talent, and replaced [[Matt Johnson]] in the role of [[Deputy_Station_Directors|Deputy Station Director]].

*Shortly after taking over as Computing Officer was involved in the unfortunate [[Drive Crash]] incident
*Has since implemented a backup solution to prevent a similar accident happening again
*Dreamt up the new [[docs:Tally_(Roxanne)| Tally]] system with [[Michael Chislett]]
*Started the continuous live channel idea that led to the start of replacing [[Spider and SchedSeven]] with Best Tech award winning [[Tarantula]] (and wrote a sizable chunk of it).
*Designed and built the balanced [[Studio Comms]] system [[docs:Wedge_(Comms) | Wedge]]
*Wrote the Raspberry Pi VT server PiVT, and then completely rewrote it when the original was found to be rubbish.
*Did most of the computery bits for [[docs:Kenobi|Kenobi]], which won a Best Tech award.
*Produced [[Battle Of The Bands 2014]] with [[Robert Walker]]
*Wrote confusing third-person autobiography!

Live on the Lawn took place on Saturday 17th May 2014 (Summer Wk4) running for 1 hour 17 minutes. It was produced and directed by [[Grace Winpenny]], and the assistant producers were [[Ellen Dunbavin]] and [[David Heaton]]. [[Matt Judge]] and [[Chris Wall]] presented the show.

=The Live Show=
Live on the Lawn (LotL) 2014 aimed for even more live content than in 2013 but kept much of the same structure. The set was 'just off the lawn' outside YSTV which meant that technical difficulties were easier to solve than if the show had been a 'real OB'. The main focus was live music acts but the show also included interviews with [[Kieron Moore]] about [[Union]] Episode 3 (which made its debut after LotL), and a Skype Interview with [[Emma Bew]] which was ever so slightly hi-jacked by two of the Union cast...

Rigging began around 12pm, and was supervised by the Tech team, but most of the actual rigging was completed by members who had attended [[OB Training]]. By the [[Technical Director]]'s words of approval, it is safe to say that OB Training was effective and very useful for members with less rigging experience.

* LotL2014 was the first show to include a live Skype interview! This is credit to of the Tech and Computing teams, particularly the day before the show.
* Props - don't let guests walk away with them though, thanks to Dramasoc and various members of YSTV for lending
* The presenters were brilliant, very natural, good response to direction and potential changes in the show's plan. Also, the producers wanted the presenters not to wear sunglasses, as eyes are the windows to the soul, and the presenters responded nicely to their requests.
* the acts were of a really high standard, future producers should contact people in the music department directly before sending out a general call for acts to perform - the response rate is much better as the acts feel more valued!
* We mostly stuck to the original schedule...
* Green Room was booked, although should have probably booked further in advance than the day before....
* Everyone listened well and was calm and co-operative.

==The Bad==
* Perhaps no need for lighting rig outdoors with blistering heat.
* Umbrellas would have been useful - even in sunshine.
* Comms need to be set-up earlier, esp if the sofa isn't being used! This caused much panic for the director in the hour before the show, but all issues were resolved in the final moments of preparation.
* One act didn't turn up until just about to perform, which would have meant the show had to finish early - always have a contingency plan, planned ahead of the show rather than during the show.
* Perhaps more musical acts/variety would have added more interest. We were aware of the changing microphone set-up required between Leo and Vox. This was managed beautifully by the Lawn Manager and potentially more ensemble acts could be included in future versions of LotL.
* Had ordered inflatable parrot for 89p which only arrived the Tuesday after the show, he now sits in the control room but remains nameless.
* [[Kenric]]'s camera stopped working for a mysterious reason during Leo's performance, which the technical team responded to within the performance.
* The singing challenge was a little underwhelming, more planning would have been useful here.
* Ran slightly under hoped time - 90 minutes - but as we were about 5 minutes late in starting the show.

Grace arrived at York in 2011, keen to investigate the social habits of waterfowl and to do a Music degree. Amazingly, it took her until 2013 to become a member of YSTV. Grace had encountered YSTV on numerous occasions around campus and thought it looked like fun so vowed to join in her 3rd year at York.

Through the kind/crazed encouragement of [[Matt Johnson]], Grace decided to give presenting a go and has never looked back. A personal highlight was co-presenting [[Children in Need 2013]] with [[Matt Judge]] where she demonstrated her baking prowess.

Grace would like to learn more about how not to break computers and listens in awe to the technical/computing-related discussions between [[Sam Nicholson]] and [[Robert Walker]]. She also enjoyed being [[David Heaton]]'s Cable Monkey during the Wednesday semi-final of [[Battle of the Bands 2014]].

She had an amazing time at NaSTA 2014, despite receiving mixed feedback for her 'Best On-Screen Female' Entry. Grace still 'really likes to present things' and also 'really likes typing things', and was elected as [[Secretary]] on 14th May 2014 for the 2014-2015 academic year. She can't wait to be [[Helen Hobin]]'s right-hand-man for station meetings in the next year!

Live on the Lawn took place on Saturday 17th May 2014 (Summer Wk4) running for 1 hour 17 minutes. It was produced and directed by [[Grace Winpenny]], and the assistant producers were [[Ellen Dunbavin]] and [[David Heaton]]. [[Matt Judge]] and [[Chris Wall]] presented the show.

=The Live Show=
Live on the Lawn (LotL) 2014 aimed for even more live content than in 2013 but kept much of the same structure. The set was 'just off the lawn' outside YSTV which meant that technical difficulties were easier to solve than if the show had been a 'real OB'. The main focus was live music acts but the show also included interviews with [[Kieron Moore]] about [[Union]] Episode 3 (which made its debut after LotL), and a Skype Interview with [[Emma Bew]] which was ever so slightly hi-jacked by two of the Union cast...

Rigging began around 12pm, and was supervised by the Tech team, but most of the actual rigging was completed by members who had attended [[OB Training]]. By the [[Technical Director]]'s words of approval, it is safe to say that OB Training was effective and very useful for members with less rigging experience.

==Live Music Performances==

*Louise Essex: Playing guitar and singing some chilled out original songs 'Heiress' and 'By the Lamp'.
*Harriet Gibson: Playing guitar and singing upbeat covers of 'Dance Me to the End of Love' and 'Boob Song'.
*Leo James: Playing guitar and singing 'Time to Reconcile' and 'I Only Pray When I'm Desperate'.
*Vox: Vocal Acapella Ensemble performing 'Hide and Seek' and 'When I Survey'.

==Additional Guests on the Show==
*[[Kieron Moore]] discussing Episode 3 of [[Union]] and the challenges of taking the YourUnion Officers to the NUS Conference.
*Interview with [[Emma Bew]], one of the [[Woodstock 2013]] Producers, through the power of Skype.
*[[Andy Watts]]' and[[James Wood]]'s spontaneous appearance, bringing ice-cream to Matt and Chris, and even introducing Leo's performance.

From the beginning of time, the production team wanted to minimise the number and length of VTs in LotL, because they felt the emphasis should be on live content. This is because LotL is a warm-up show for [[Woodstock]], [[YSTV]]'s longest Live OB.

==Title Sequence==
Taking inspiration from the [[NaSTA]] award-winning [[Lights on Literature]], the producers decided to create a stop-motion animation title sequence. This was filmed on the Wednesday before the show with [[Helen Hobin]] and [[Grace Winpenny]] moving props around whilst [[Tom Cheyney]] made miracles happen on his camera. Grace then edited the title sequence on the Thursday and the files were ready for Saturday afternoon.

Filming took place on Vanbrugh Bowl (much to the confusion of Music Students and the waterfowl inhabitants of the grass) and props were kindly lent by several [[YSTV]] members, the Props Drawer and from Dramasoc. Whilst the weather was mainly sunny, occasionally the Sun decided to hide, so there are some lighting inconsistencies. Whilst editing, it was decided that Colour Correction was too much fuss and that the differences in lighting added to the quirkiness of the title sequence. The music used in the titles, stings and credits is public domain.

Short sections of the title sequence VT were used as stings for the other VT's.

==Union Episode 3 Promo==
Not made for LotL but used as Episode 3 was shown straight after the show. Gave viewers chance to get to know what [[Union]] is and what to expect from this unique episode.

==Woodstock 2013 highlights==
When procrastination takes hold, editing happens, and VTs are made. The producers had a vague outline of the show in the weeks before LotL, and knew they wanted to talk about last year's Woodstock, so a 58 second VT was made to prompt interviews, and, once again, to bring viewers up to speed, particularly if they had not been to a Woodstock

Grace arrived at York in 2011, keen to investigate the social habits of waterfowl and to do a Music degree. Amazingly, it took her until 2013 to become a member of YSTV. Because of her involvement with various performing arts societies, Grace encountered YSTV on numerous occasions around campus and thought it looked like fun so vowed to join in her 3rd year at York.

Through the kind/crazed encouragement of [[Matt Johnson]], Grace decided to give presenting a go and has never looked back. A personal highlight was co-presenting [[Children in Need 2013]] with [[Matt Judge]] where she demonstrated her baking prowess.

Following in the massive footsteps of [[Helen Hobin]], Grace decided to try editing and found that she is not completely computer-illiterate and successfully completed her first Society Promo in November 2013.

Grace would like to learn more about how not to break computers and listens in awe to the technical/computing-related discussions between [[Sam Nicholson]] and [[Robert Walker]].

Grace ran for YUSU Welfare and Community Officer in the 2014 Elections and really missed doing YSTV during campaigning. She did, however, order a purple hoodie which she regretted the moment campaigning was over, due to wearing purple and yellow for 2 weeks.

She is YSTV's 'Best Onscreen Female' Entry for the 2014 NASTA and is intrigued by [[Chris Wall]]'s stories about toothpaste.
