Tim joined YSTV in his first term at York, in 1996. He was elected to the post of [[Treasurer]] in 1997 after proving his budgeting skills (buying two cheeseburgers and reconstructing them rather than one big mac in McDonalds...). He later held the post of [[Technical Director]] and, with [[Rob Sprowson]], rewired much of York Uni campus' TV network.

During the summer holidays Tim honed his skills working as an engineer at BBC TV Centre, but after graduating in 1999 went to earn some real money at Globecast in North London.

In 2010, he returned to Auntie's bosom in a move that industry experts described as 'significant' for the corporation[1].

Pretty much...it was still a tradition when I started in 2002 but the last year we did it was 2003, in 2004 hardly anyone graduated so we kind of forgot (and the station had just been through quite a shaky period so it wasn't at the forefront of our minds) and as far as I know it didn't happen in 2005 (well I'm not an honorary member so I hope not! :-)). As I have written elsewhere the list of honorary members is greater than Greg Dyke and the son of some recent members, I don't know if there's any way to find out rather than trawling through old minutes [[User:Jonathan|Jonathan]] 09:39, 21 June 2007 (BST)

== Sets ==
YSTV took over Derwent JCR to act as both a control room and link set. The link set consisted of the silver-topped Ikea trestle table against a purple setboard. Two presenters on stools sat either side of it, with a small monitor placed between them.

In the adjacent room, D/016, was the Press Conference, which was a new initiative after some chaotic business with getting candidates interviewed the previous year. Unfortunately it suffered from a rather unprepossessing set (or lack thereof!) and having URY's microphones all over the place!

There was also a single camera and a presenter in the Dining Room.

== Technical ==
[[Matt Hammond]] wrote a very swish-looking graphics system that ran on his Acorn Risc PC, which was then controlled by commands sent over a serial line from a user interface on a control machine (also an Acorn). There were also a number of other Acorn machines that provided cues for presenters, although this system was rushed into service and didn't work that well.

The "silver-topped trestle table" (always referred to in full by those were there) would later be used by the membership for all manner of purposes including various off-camera uses, as the main set of [[Bulletin (again)|Bulletin]] for a while, [[Off The Cuff]] and coming full circle as the support for the [[Bona Dicta]] table top in [[Elections 2007]].

NaSTA 1999

Hosted by GUST in Glasgow. [[Tim Hackett]], [[Paul Soulsby]], [[Chris Ward]] and [[Steve Auld]] were present from YSTV. There was also a flying visit from [[Peter Bowles]] who happened to be in the area (Peter was referred to as the "Naked Man" following YSTV's highly commended Station Ident).

YSTV won News and Current Affairs ([[Bona Dicta]]) and Title Sequence ([[Bona Dicta]]). Highly Commended Station Ident ([[Naturally YSTV]]). The wins featured in the Yorkshire Evening Press. (See the [[Press Clippings]]).

Speakers included Ewan Angus from BBC Scotland - which led to the [[Student TV night]] on BBC Choice Scotland and YSTV's contribution, [[Making of Bulletin]].

YSTV has had a long and productive history as a key player in NaSTA. We have hosted or co-hosted the annual Conference and Awards Ceremony three times in the last 10 years (1997, 2002 and 2006). Election 98

Election 98 had a medieval theme and was presented from the dungeons under Goodricke (actually a very impressive set in the usual studio).

It's notable for being the final time the YUSU Election Night was held in Goodricke, and also for being on air for over ten hours. Due to a protracted set of re-counts the programme finally went off air around 7.30am on Friday morning, having stayed on air the whole night.

The spread out nature of the elections, where several sets and two directors work in tandem, caused synchronisation problems when switching between sets or introducing video clips. To work round this, some software originally written for [[Election 97]] was dusted off for 98 which forced all sets to use one common time. A large countdown accompanied the real time. This appears on camera towards the end of the show when the cameras are turned on the crew, who are snoozing by the clock.

EN 99 (as it was stylistically called on screen) was the first election night to be held in Derwent.

It dispensed with the themed designs of the previous three programmes and stayed (fairly) serious. The show was hosted from Derwent JCR and didn't really have a set as such - the show used what was available in way of furniture there. This can perhaps be forgiven due to the huge technical challenge this evening posted to YSTV - the signal from the programme had to be sent back to Goodricke HQ so it could be re-transmitted to the YSTV network (including Derwent, ironically). This was achieved using the [[return feed]] - or more accurately not. Despite their best efforts the show ended up being transmitted only to Derwent.

When discussing the themes the previous programmes had, presenter [[Debbie Rule]] remarked that this year's theme had been "you want us to move where?!".

It should be pointed out that for years the off-air YSTV naming convention for the election night programme during production was simply "EN 9X", and in 1999 it seemed to make the transfer to the screen (only for the presenters to have to explain a number of times what EN stood for). The following year saw EN2K, followed by EN2K+1, all the way up the EN2K+3, which appears to have been the final time "EN" was used quite so much in the pre-production. This coincided with efforts to make the election coverage more than just about the "night" itself, what with candidate interviews and [[Bona Dicta]] specials throughout the week, plus repeating on the [[Video Server]].

The idea was to report on issues relevent to the female of the species and the first edition included a York police officer being interviewed in the studio. However, as it was recorded in sections and edited together, it took a long time to produce and only one programme was ever made.

A similar (although much more light-hearted) idea would later be made in the form of [[Welcome to Venus]].

Lolita was a one-off drama piece written, produced and directed by [[Claire Kilner]] with a cast largely auditioned from Drama Soc types. Production took place throughout most of 1999 finishing in February 2000.

Filming locations included the local Sainsburys, Wellington Street, Alcuin bar, student bedrooms, Goodricke toilets and a multi-camera shoot in the studio as part of a Jerry Springer-style sequence.

When the [[Video Server]] sprung into life in October 2003 it was one of the archive shows added to fill out the schedules and as such was shown regularly after for a few years.

The Review

The Review has had three different incarnations on YSTV. Whilst they were essentially continuations of the same idea they were all very different from each other and produced by different teams.

==2000 Version==
The first incarnation of the show was produced by [[Chris Ward]].
It had a set with the show's name cut out of perspex, a very post-modern coffee table, some inflatable beanbags and a lava lamp. All backed by some velvet, purple drapes the station had been donated - sadly YSTV's ageing cameras couldn't do purple and the result was the visual equivalent of the standard [[black drapes]].
It also had a nifty title sequence showing arty places around York, themed graphics, menus and VT inserts. Music was specially composed by [[Paul Soulsby]].

The show was presented by [[Chris Stones]] who had previously fronted a sardonic arts round-up in [[Bulletin (again)|Bulletin]] and this was essentially an expanded version of this. Each episode Chris was joined by various reviewers who jointly discussed films, plays, musical peformances and anything that took their fancy.
Contributers included [[Helen Wardlaw]], [[Anne Seymour]] and [[Thea Darricotte]].

Unusually for YSTV at this time, the show wasn't broadcast live. It was recorded as-live in sections, assembled on the fly with the relatively new [[JVC SVHS|SVHS shuttle controller]].

Sadly, the producer's graduation in summer 2000 meant this version of The Review managed only two episodes!

==2003 Version==
In Autumn 2003 new member [[Kate Friend]] expressed a desire to revive the show, which would this time primarily be a film review programme but did include roundups from the drama barn too. The original title sequence was going to be used until [[Nik Morris]] came up with a new, cartoony sequence. It was presented by {{unsure|Natalie Someone}} and edited by fresher [[Rowan de Pomerai]]. This team produced a number of editions over the Autumn and Spring terms of 2003/4. One edition also marked the first appearances of [[Vanky]] and [[Anthony Laverty]] on YSTV as pundits. This incarnation ground to a halt when Kate and Natalie had too much work to carry it on.

==2004 Version==
Rowan was keen to get the show running again and in the Autumn of 2004 new members [[Kat Sutton]] and [[David Firth]] became the new hosts and producers. The programme was now exclusively about films, and a variety of movie posters were used for the set. The show would also feature the top ten movies, and in February 2005 had an Oscars special complete with costumes! Another new title sequence was made by [[Steve Walker]] featuring the programme's "R" logo being fashioned in a lava pool. In a nod to the past the previous title sequence played on the walls of the room. This version of the programme ended when Kat graduated.

==2006 Version?==

Early in 2006 [[Sarah Leese]] had a desire to revive the programme once again - however due to her producing of [[Elections 2006]] this was not possible.

2001's election programme was produced by [[Michael Prior-Jones]] and [[Jenny Gordon]].

It had a title sequence featuring various different pieces of control room equipment being used.

It introduced a new YSTV desk, which went on to be used for many news and elections shows over the next five years. Its last use as a whole to date was in [[YSTV Week]] in Summer 2006, but it is still retained by YSTV, the top piece currently being used by [[YSTV News]].

Sadly the whole thing was recorded without sound.

Fergus sings the Blues

Shot on a single camera to "Let's face the music and dance" from the musical "High Society", in the SU executive office (which still looks much the same 10 years later!).

The singing star is Fergus Drake, who was the SU President 1996-97.

A very poor copy of this exists in the YSTV Archive on Umatic tape U1. It looks as though it has been dubbed from VHS by the amount of picture noise, and it also has a major Umatic drop-out near the beginning. The leader clock text reads

Children In Need 1998

As usual, an event organised by YSTV was held in Goodricke Dining Hall and the coverage from this formed the basis for most of the programme.

According to the Spring Term 1999 newsletter, the event and programme were actually held 2 weeks after the BBC's charity night! {{unsure|This may have been because Goodricke Dining Hall was already booked on the actual night?}}

Children In Need 1999

As with the preceding years, Children in Need 1999 was to see YSTV organising a student night in Goodricke Dining Hall with coverage forming the basis of the TV show.

This year's producer was [[Peter Bowles]] and instead of just a regular disco, he intended to make the Goodricke event a night full of games - e.g limbo competitions, auctioning kisses etc. - hence the name, 'Big Fun'.

The weeks leading up to the night were a bit fraught with minimal ticket sales and problems with Ents equipment being booked up elsewhere, and there were even brief discussions about calling it off.

This was alongside controversy surrounding publicity for the event. Peter persuaded a female fresher called Holly {{unsure|surname}} to be wheeled around campus in a pool of baked beans wearing a bikini accompanied by people with collection buckets. It was all filmed for a VT that would go out on the night. However, the Women's Officers objected to Peter's subsequent posters featuring a picture of Holly alongside the caption - "She's been naughty! See her punished!" Articles in Nouse and Vision followed.

However despite all that, Peter's determination that Big Fun would succeed was proved right - with Peter completely in his element compering the night's entertainment.

As a consequence of the vast planning that the Goodricke event took, the TV programme may have been a little neglected, with [[Alex Hudson]] hastily constructing a set around the [[Sofa]] before the show went on air.

The programme was however memorable for [[Paul Soulsby]] attempting a sponsored eat-a-Mega-Muffin-as-fast-as-you-can and [[Andrew Carter]] having his pony tail cut off for charity. Peter also made a brief appearence on the local BBC Children in Need opt-out showing off the 'CIN' he'd had shaved in the back of his head.

Some photos can be found on [[https://ystv.york.ac.uk/fun/archive/cin1999/index.php the YSTV website]]. None appear to record the show's nickname of "Big Fire" caused by Peter putting some bails of hay underneath the lighting dimmers!

One of the other controversial elements of that year's show - female mud wrestling (can you spot a theme?) - was re-screened during 2003's much less ambitious programme.

Making of Bulletin

Making of Bulletin was a one-off documentary made for BBC Choice Scotland and broadcast as part of their [[student TV night]] in January 2000.

At the [[NaSTA 1999|1999 NaSTA]] conference in Glasgow, one of the speakers was Ewan Angus, a commissioning editor from BBC Scotland. Through GUST (Glasgow Uni Student TV), he commissioned each of the stations to produce a short programme. Each had to submit several programme ideas and one was to be picked and funded.

Three different ideas were asked for, a new episode of [[Games Disaster]] was favoured by YSTV, but the suggestion to make a behind-the-scenes documentary about YSTV's regular news programme [[Bulletin (again)|Bulletin]] was the one chosen. Other programs came from GUST, GTV, BTV and STOIC.

The BBC paid for YSTV to hire a DV camera, microphones and a DV deck to export to for the project which was edited on the station's own Mac. The total cost was £650.

The resulting 8-minute-or-so documentary may not have acurately reflected a normal edition of Bulletin, but it wasn't bad for a team that had never made a documentary nor edited anything of that length before.

Most members of the station contributed to the project which was produced and edited by [[Chris Ward]], [[Paul Soulsby]] and [[Peter Bowles]].

A campus politics panel show, Bona Dicta is almost certainly YSTV's longest running show.

The programme was first broadcast in the autumn of 1997, produced by [[Debbie Rule]] and presented by [[Julie Knox]]. It followed on from 1996's very similar [[The Panel]]. The format remained unchanged for most of the run - four campus hacks or politicians, sitting round a table talking about union politics. The programme was designed to be screened just before Tuesday's fortnightly Union General Meeting, and would discuss the agenda. The set was very basic - the table was a circular bit of wood balanced on stools and [[black drapes]] were placed around the back of the studio as a backdrop.

The first title sequence was by [[Graham Quince]], in which a broken compass reassembled, animated on the [[Commodore Amiga]] (it was a complete rip off of the titles of a cool legal drama at the time called Murder One).

Towards the end of 1998, an attempt was made to give the show a bit more production. A title sequence consisting of UGM footage and talking heads was made by [[Chris Ward]] accompanied by a new version of the old [[Week by Week]] theme music digitally recreated by [[Paul Soulsby]]. This title sequence was used for nearly five years, which may be the longest time a title sequence has been used so regularly on YSTV. The closing credits included footage from that evening's show - making use of the new Mac edit suite that had recently been acquired.

The new-look show went on to win two awards at the 1999 NaSTA conference in Glasgow for News & Current Affairs and Title Sequence (See the [[Press Clippings]]). The wins were featured in the Yorkshire Evening Press shortly afterwards including an interview with Julie Knox.

Julie continued to present the show until [[James Brookes]] took over throughout much of 1999-2000, after which the presenters were never consistent, changing very frequently. Due to the political nature of the programme it was probably the most watched on the station - usually by other campus hacks eager to see their friends. When the programme went online in October 2004 it was one of the most-watched on the website, with each edition attracting hundreds of hits. Despite this Bona Dicta was often (perhaps unfairly) derided for being stale, or dull, or unexciting to crew. However it did get some notable guests - a 2002 edition featured the new Vice-Chancellor Brian Cantor in debate with the then SU President, URY Station Manager and editor of Vision.

In Summer 2003 the show adopted the new news and current affairs standard set, along with a new title sequence in November of that year. The latter was produced by [[Steve Walker]], and featured the new Bona Dicta logo flying around Central Hall. There was also a new theme tune, a more down-beat version of the [[YSTV Week]] theme tune. The new producer and presenter was [[Michael Brothwell]], now a presenter on BBC Radio York. After Michael decided to stay behind-the-scenes there were a number of guest presenters such as [[James Flinders]], [[Michelle Donelan]] and URY's [[James Wickham]]. Around March 2004 [[James Gallagher]] became the regular presenter of the programme, which had by now doubled in length to one hour and begun debating national politics as well as campus politics. There was also an effort to include VTs, such as the previous fortnight's UGM highlights.

From October 2004 [[Matthew Platts]] took charge for a year, adding many surreal elements familiar to viewers of [[Solipsism]]. For the final year of the programme [[Kev Larkin]] presented and produced, and the format also changed for the first time, mimicking the BBC's This Week. There was also another new look, featuring images from around York and London. However by this point UGM voting had been taken online, with the remaining "discussion" meetings poorly attended and political apathy in the university increasing. As a result of this - and of course the lack of a producer willing to take on the show - the programme ended regular production in March 2006.

It returned for [[Elections 2007]] in two successful debate programmes, meaning it must be one of the few programmes on YSTV to notch up ten year on air (other than coverage of events such as Elections, Roses etc). [[James Gallagher]] has acknowledged that URY's Sourcenight programme - which he launched in 2003, and continues to this day - is a complete ripoff of Bona Dicta.

That's The Way I Like It

[[Chris Parker]]'s Magnum Opus promo. Set to the classic re-interpretation of 'That's The Way (I Like It)' from the Space Jam Original Soundtrack the promo featured a mix of both YSTV and broadcast clips showcasing the complete output from the station at that time.

The promo started with a selection of YSTV and other broadcasters' idents, expertly cut to the opening beat, and then led the viewer through a roller-coaster ride of emotions until finishing with the definitive scene from Space Jam of Porky Pig exclaiming that he'd 'Wet himself'.

This was used extensively as a filler in [[Children In Need]], [[YUSU Election Nights|Election Night]] and [[Open Day]] programmes for the next few years.

Due to a typo on the [[Timeclock]] this promo is also sometimes known as "That's the way ah ha ha ha" which should have read "ah ha ah ha" to match the soundtrack.

The Pill

The Pill was a factual programme made by an all-female production team assembled by [[Peter Bowles]] from the many freshers who had joined the station in autumn 1999. [[Genevieve Horwood]] was one of the producer/presenters.

The idea was to report on issues relevent to the female of the species and the first edition included a York police officer being interviewed in the studio. However, as it was recorded in sections and edited together, it took a long time to produce and only one programme was ever made.

A similar (although much more light-hearted) idea would later be made in the form of [[Welcome to Venus]].

Idents are the short videos slotted in before and after our main programs in order to reinforce YSTV's channel identity. In practise they were very rarely shown until the availability of the [[Video Server]] in 2003. From 2005 the re-written scheduling system plays out idents automatically whenever there is a suitable gap in the schedules, thus considerably increasing their usage.

Many have had long lives, although as we only make about two a year most years this is probably a good thing. This is a category where YSTV has a long history of [[NaSTA]] success, winning either best or highly commended {{unsure|in five successive years from 2002-2006}}

Big Telly

Big Telly is the a nick-name given to the large 40" projection television that YSTV bought from the physics department in the academic year 1998/99. The picture it produces was never great but until the advent of regular [[chroma key]] it was the only way of generating a large screen image in the studio. It was however very difficult to get into the studio due to its size - usually it was rolled down through the fire escape over an old set board from [[Election 98]]! It was used on programmes such as [[Games Disaster]], [[Lolita]], [[Red Braces]], [[YSTV-am]] and [[Bulletin]].

It's final appearance on screen was in [[Elections 2003]], after which the new [[Panasonic Max]] was used for the purpose. These days it is usually left outside Derwent JCR for the queues on election night to watch the show, and Goodricke JCRC borrow it for their karaoke nights in Goodricke bar (and then forget to bring it back).

The idea of a monitor on set is not dead - a more manageably sized 20" TFT [[On-set monitor]] was bought for the purpose in February 2007.

YSTV has a long, proud history of producing unadulterated rip-offs and parodies of other channels' programming. Here's a list of some of them, starting with the obvious steals:

*[[Have I Got News For YUSU]] - Have I Got News For You
*[[Whose YSTV is it Anyway]] - Whose Line Is It Anyway?
*[[URYVision Song Contest]] - Eurovison Song Contest (we can blame URY for this one!)
*[[Summer Expedition]] - Blue Peter have been doing this idea for 40 years
*[[YSTV's Bloomers]] - Auntie's Bloomers
*[[Welcome To Venus]] - Loose Women

YSTV were approached in late 2003 to produce a rip-off of The Office called The Union, transferring Slough to Heslington, but this was never made.

Although not direct rip-offs the following owe a lot to other shows:
*[[Jim'll Sodomise You]] - parody of Jim'll Fix It (alledgedly)
*[[The Hand Job]] - charades game like Give Us A Clue
*[[YSTV-am]] - inspired by The Big Breakfast and a name derived from TV-am
*[[Lazy Lunch]] - Name comes from C4's Late/Light Lunch but this show had no cookery whatsoever
*[[This Afternoon]] - named as a parody of This Morning, was a similar magazine show
*[[Campus Today]] - again featuring This Morning-style set-up and theme tune
*[[Games Disaster]] - take-off of Games Master's name but only the first series was much like the C4 show
*[[Off The Cuff]] - setup very reminiscent of the Children's BBC broom cupboard
*[[This Is YOUR: Manifesto]] - theme tune, title and red book are from This Is Your Life
*[[Children In Need]] - not really a rip-off but inspired by BBC telethon of the same name
*[[Good Morning Campus]] - name derives from Good Morning Britain but show was more like BBC Breakfast

[[LipSync]] deserves an honourable mention for all the rounds it has ripped-off from other panel shows over the years! [[Limited Edition]] has also played fast-and-loose with features from mainstream TV, including TopGear's ''Star in a Reasonably Priced Car'' being honoured with ''Star in a Remote Control Car''.

Finally, YSTV were ripped-off in a way when around a year after [[Stereotypes]] was made, a very similar programme called "He Says, She Says" was broadcast on BBC2 - and the title of which was a working title for [[Stereotypes]]!
